RoSPA_man
Hi While I'm having my headers welded, I'm thinking of what general lubeing I could do around the bike while I await the return of my header pipes. The service manual doesn't particularly specify areas that need lubeing, so I'm thinking as follows: Main areas: 1. Throttle bodies: How much lube to apply and where- on and around teh throttle pulleys or will that attract dirt? Can I get at the right areas without removing the body? 2. Under Throttle grip on handlebar - thick gease/ general grease or a thin 3in one oil? 3. Shock Unit pivots front and rear 4. Leave throttle cables alone or put some teflon based lube down? 5 Centre and side stands Are there any other obvious places that get neglected that need to be lubed? Link to comment
johnlt
Not sure any of those items need lube anymore but I'd sure take the opportunity to check tightness of bolts/nuts. This is especially true on the center stand and side stand. I've have found on several late model BMWs that the center and side stand bolts/nuts will not stay tight, even when torqued correctly. I check mine at every oil change. Link to comment

None, they do not need lube so long as they are clean. 2. Under Throttle grip on handlebar - thick gease/ general grease or a thin 3in one oil? See number 1. 3. Shock Unit pivots front and rear Usually not an issue either. 4. Leave throttle cables alone or put some teflon based lube down? Leave alone, but check for restriction/damage. 5 Centre and side stands Definitely a good idea to clean and lube. Are there any other obvious places that get neglected that need to be lubed? Lube, not really. But, check all your bolts, clean everything and look for corrosion. Make sure your fork pinch bolts are properly torqued, and look for any other leaks. Jim Link to comment
RoSPA_man
That makes life easy! I do however recall when the bike was under warranty, the dealer telling me that the throttle grip was "crudded up" and needed to be cleaned and lubed - I had suspected tight throttle cables but he said that it was the twist grip itself. If it is crudded up it is likely because someone lubed it. Clean and dry the plastic parts move smoothly. Add lube and it atracts dirt, and no longer moves smoothly. The cables are teflon lined, and should never be lubed. Jim Link to comment
Hall Vince
H. Why do your headers need welding? Interesting comments about the stand bolts and fork pinch bolts. The Fork pinch bolts reminds me that I've read that elswhere as well. Is the torque for them in the manual? I must check mine. \v/ Link to comment
