Question re: R1200GS mirrors

The mirrors on a GS have a threaded stem that screws into a hole/bracket on the handlebar.

Is that an M8, or M10 thread?

The threaded stem is about .393 inches in diameter measured with a micrometer.

That makes it an M10 right?

The length of the stem just over 1/2 an inch.

I'm assuming they are the same on GS and GS Adventure.

If someone doesn't post a reply first I'll pull one of mine when I get home tonight and check it.

Hey Ken, as long as you're up in Alberta now, you should have plenty of time to pull a piston and check the wrist pin diameter for me right? :dopeslap::wave:

 Isn't that the truth! But I have big plans - this year I'm going to ride BOTH days of summer!

But ISFA your request, BTDT:

I came up with a 9mm x 1.50

Hmmm. That's at odds with krussell's description of a 10mm thread.

Hmmm...

05 vs 09?

Or are we measuring two different things. There are threads on the bottom of the mirror shaft. Then there is an adaptor that has threads on the bottom of it that thread into the mount on the bar. I measured the threads on the adaptor, not the mirror shaft.

And here is the adapter...

I measured the second one, as that is what goes into the mount on the bar.

OK, so...hypothetically speaking...if I was to make a mirror extender, I'd need a clearance hole for a 10mm bolt on one end of it, and an M10 internal thread on the other end to receive the external-threaded portion of the above-pictured adapter. Correct?

You asked about '05 versus '09 model years. Was there a change?

I did not use any tools whatsoever when fitting R1150GS mirrors onto my R1200RT.

The mirrors do vibrate so the fewer joining surfaces the better.

Yes. If you are planning on making extenders for a GS then you'll need to carefully consider the switchgear and fluid resevoirs. Things are pretty busy, here are some pictures.

Not that I'm aware of. I was speculating why Ken and my measurements are different.

Why not buy these? Mirror extension.

I have a pair on my '06 nice addition.

It's not yet clear if Mitch was actually asking with the intent of making mirror extensions. :-)

Regarding the ztechnik ones, do the work with the fog light switch on late model adventures? Seems like it would be in the way.

the little connector is a safety device also. When I leaned my bike against the garage door, that is where the mirror "broke" and it was easily repaired when I figured out I could just replace the fitting.

I have those mirrors direct on my RT and they work perfectly.

If you don't like mirrors try the new REEVU helmet with integrated rearview mirror. Watched a video about it yday on Youtube.
