What is involved in changing my R12RT headlights from H7 to HID? I see that ebay has a Xenon HID ballast to replace the H7, but don't know if that kit is all that is needed. I assume that 3 are needed to replace all bulbs on the RT? Thanks.

Why bother with this.

I had HID on my 2007 KGT sold it for a 2008 RT and frankly

I don't see much difference.

It may be superior in principle but out on the road the RT's

lighting is pretty good.

I would spend the money on the rear lighting instead. Just my opinion.

I tire of changing the H7 bulb. I have the same bulb in my Volvo and I change those regularly also.

There is a tech article buried someplace that suggests that the reflector design is different for HID bulbs due to the different location of the light source within the bulb, therefore a bulb-only retrofit into an existing reflector does not provide the full lighing benefit. How true that is I don't know.

 

I too am less than enamored with the OEM bulb life, but I don't particularly want to go through all of the trouble of installing ballasts, penetrating the access covers, and fooling the Canbus system to make the bulb fault indication go away. And quite honestly, I also agree that the stock lighting is pretty good (best of any motorcycle I've owned so far) and it is adequate for me.

I have a 2005 RT, installed aftermarket HIDs, and would not go back to halogen. I haven't got time right now to respond properly in answer to your query but suggest you do a search of the site because this has been discussed many times before....

 

I am surprised you have had only a couple of responses and can only put it down to every else thinking that others will respond.... classic case of "this has been asked so often"..

 

I'll check the site next week and if you haven't had a deluf=ge of responses by then I'll make the time to give you the full brief.

Hitechcpa, it's not a big deal installing HID's on a RT, and they work really good. I used the 1 off motorsports HID's. I took the fairing off and installed the ballasts on the flat surface under the fairing under the oil cooler cover with two sided tape supplied with the kit.
