Storm 2 Tire wear pattern

I just put on a new set of Avon Strom 2's before DVD and when I got home I noticed an interesting wear pattern. As you can see ater hooning with the Lancaster boys (in picture below) I actually wore the sides down more then the center.

There definately is a much harder compound in the center on the Storm 2's, It will be interesting to see over time how this will wear.

I didn't get a picture below, I feel I've been cheated!

That is interesting, are these the new Avon Storm "Ultras"? Looks like a dual compound to me, glad to see you're getting your money's worth out of 'em too.

Does anyone see the pic?

Yes, the pic looks fine. The tire actually doesn't look like it has "any" wear. Still looks like a new tire.

Look closely you will see the center strip of rubber approx 2 inchs wide (smooth) there is a distinctive line between the soft rubber and hard.

No I think what the OP means is the wear on the following edge of the grooves.

Is quite common on the rears, well it always has been on my PR2s.

I run a PR Sport on the front my RT now (I used them on my R12ST as well) although supposidly softer compound they still did 9k miles (as much as I got from a PR2 front and twice as much as a Pilot Power front, I had to remove those tyres from the front due to cupping)

The Pilot Sport wears perfectly all over down to the markers, no bad effect on handling due to cupping.

oops,

Cross posting.

I see the two rubber compounds your talking about.

TBH I've not found harder compound in the center any advantage for longevity. Until I found the PR Sport most of my tyres (various brands)all wore on the edge. Harder compound centers just made it look worse.

Be interested to see the tyre at end of it's life.

I can see the picture of the tire, and the two different compounds clearly. That wear is normal. It's normal to get that roughness on the sides of a "softer" compound tire.

I just got a new front, and wanted to try the Storm 2 Ultra, but the PRII was $20 less and in stock, so I went with it. I really liked the turn-in, and feel of the first Storm tires, but I get better mileage with the PRIIs.

In the picture I don't see is the Lancaster gang hooning though?

  • 2 months later...

Just thought I'd mention this.

I have been rrunning a Michelin Pilot Sport on a R12ST with very good results (no cupping) and thought I would do the same with the RT.

However...

The Pilot Sport on the Front of the R12RT wears more in the center. I didn't experiance this on my ST, so I assume the extra weight over the front is the cause. I have 5k on the front now and have feathering on the center which is less than 1mm now. Conclusion, I would not be inclined to recomend the Sport on the front of the RT.[/b]
