Saturday at DVD 2010

Saturday was glorious in Death Valley, with a high of 67 F on our bike computers. Sharon and I visited the ghost town of Rhyolite, just outside of Beatty. We saw AzAl and his buddy Harold there. But we were thinking of Killer:

That stripe in the right center of the image, up to the little peak, is where the locals have been running their off road machines. It is steep!

Quite a few of the old buildings standing in ruin. Two banks, a general store, the railroad station. I liked that the starkly contrasting colors of the hillsides were reflected all over again in the stone of the buildings.

Then we rode up to Scotty's Castle. The concessionaire has moved out and no food was available there, so we didn't take the tour, but it was a beautiful ride, and the castle is spectacular. One more place on the list of things to go back for.

We moseyed on down to Stovepipe Wells, where we had been told we could get food. Unfortunately the restaurant had closed for the afternoon, and a bus load of high schoolers beat us into the convenience store.

Before we headed back to Beatty on our continued quest for lunch, I snapped a shot of this piece of memorabilia outside the convenience store. I liked the colors in it. What do you think, an old air compressor?

We finally got lunch in Beatty at 3:00!!!!! Hooray!

Nice pics Jan, thanks for sharing. The last one is definitely an air compressor. Saw a bunch like that mounted in sheds at the old quarries in New England.

Leg is good for normal things. I'm up and about all day with normal activity. Still don't have the strength to be comfortable with rough terrain, and doc said no dirt riding or skiing this season. Was fine for riding though! It should heal up just fine, but these lower leg injuries take some time. Up to 18 months I've read. So, I'm ahead of the curve, I think.

Great to see that you're riding again, Jan! Nice pics, too. I've been to DV a bunch and have never gone to Rhyolite. Maybe next year. Sorry I had to miss it this year. If our daughter hadn't given us theater tickets for this weekend, I'd have taken the cage.

Sounds like it's all about priorities!

I thought she could be trusted to load the important one, but no.

John gives a lecture on the origin of his new rug at the Saturday night steak feed!

With Lori, and Dave to his left, and I think that's Carl in the background.

Thanks for the additional pics Sharon.

Kath, being in the sign business, was taken by the sign pic. The pic of Jan in the distance behind the motos makes it appear as tho you had a leprechaun along on the ride and that he was standing on the tank bag to get a better view. ;)

Glad you're both riding together again.

Great to see you up and about Jan. OK I'm often out of the loop and I hope this is the case here. What did you mean about Killer here?

Just that the way up that slope was hard core, and that he, and others, would likely like to get their dirt bikes on it.
