A man trying to escape the Lake County Courthouse yesterday during a court hearing tried to throw himself through a window of a second-story walkway but bounced off the bulletproof glass and was immediately surrounded by court officers.

Copeland had been out on bond on charges of disorderly conduct and aggravated battery of an officer. He was in court Wednesday because he violated conditions of his bond, said Sgt. of Criminal Investigations George Manis.

After he was captured, at least six officers took Copeland to the court security office before taking him back to the courtroom, where a judge increased his bond to $1.5 million from $50,000, Manis said.

 

Copeland now faces at least one count of felony escape, Manis said.
