Hard way to get exercise

I was riding my 1100RT on Route 85 last week in Silicon Valley when it just quite. I posted technical issues on this in the ‘renching form. There was another unexpected chapter is this riding tale regarding towing.

I am sitting by the side of 85 about 3 miles form home so I figure I’ll just call AAA. I am a Plus-Member, which provides for 100 miles or more of break down transportation. My Suburban’s fuel pump quit a few years ago about 40 miles form home and they came right away and carried the car to my mechanic. When I called AAA I was informed that I had to have special motorcycle towing insurance, or pay for the tow. This completely surprised me! I had no idea that motorcycle towing was not a feature of my AAA Plus program. I also called check if my State Farm insurance policy had some coverage, no joy there. After hanging up I said several unpleasant things, to no one in particular.

Being out of work, only three miles from home and not wanting a $100(?) towing bill, I started pushing. The RT is hard to push for several reasons. It heavy, the side storage bags get in the way of walking and the Tupperware makes you stand off to the side of the bike. Pushing a RT is a great way to lose weight, but not that much fun.

People were unbelievably helpful though. Several people stopped and asked if I need gas, and I said no. Two people unexpectedly helped me push for a while. Finally, a guy in a pickup, stopped and wanted to know if I needed a lift. He rides dirt bikes so he had a ramp is the back of the pickup and tie downs. Up the bike ramp in the back of his truck, and after a short ride, I was home.

I suggest you check into your motorcycles breakdown insurance. What kind of breakdown insurance people have? Secondly, can you tow an RT? Do people do this?

Yeah, with AAA, you have to have "RV Plus" to get motorcycle coverage. And even if you have it, it can still cost you!

Most folks here like the KOA/Allstate program. I added it, but haven't needed it yet.

The Northern California/Nevada AAA (CSAA) does not offer roadside assistance for motorcycles, regardless of standard / RV coverage.

I have the AAA RV/plus.

And a rider on my motorycle insurance (very inexpensive).

And BMWMOA coverage.

One or the other should take care of it.

The insurance policy isn't limited to where and will take to nearest dealer (mileage limit).

There is a new program with the AMA that includes roadside assistance for free. All you need to do is sign-up for automatic renewal and the roadside assitance is free. It applies to all memberships and it includes 35 miles of towing for free. The standard membership is only $39 a year and with roadside assitance at that price it's a pretty good deal.

I'm surprised AMA is into the automatic renewal business. It is usually a flat out scam which can end up being a real hassle for you (or your heirs). Google "automatic renewal" and you'll be surprised at the background on this way of doing business.

Having been bitten once by a Time magazine automatic renewal scam, on principle I would not sign up for any such scheme.
