gordiet
What is the right amount of FD oil for the 1200RT? I have been putting in 230cc but I have heard it has been changed to 180cc by BMW. Is that true? Thanks GT Link to comment
smiller
That is true, 180 ml/cc is now the recommended fill. Link to comment
Mister Tee
And, I suspect the reason for 180 ml is that it just happens to be to the top of the threads of the 9 o'clock drain/fill plug for those final drives that are such configured. Link to comment

More likely it is the fact that so many have seal failures, and then FD bearing failures from lack of lube. This is, IMHO, and attempt to reduce that. Jim Link to comment
gordiet
Such a deal! I thought the Germans were smarter than that. Perhaps they can get it right next time. GT Link to comment

gordiet
To get the oil amount right the first time! It's not like they haven't built them before. GT Link to comment

GT True, but no one is perfect, no matter how hard they try. I am sure they did not intend to have issues, and equally sure they tried very hard to avoid them in light of the issues with the 1100/1150 final drives. They could simply just let it go, and do nothing. Would that be preferrable? Jim Link to comment
Marty Hill
Jim, bless you but it's a loosing battle. Link to comment

Rich06FJR1300
actually, they screwed it up twice...when the original new drives came out in 2005, they said the lube in the final drive was lifetime...then they changed it to changing the oil at 600 miles and then after the seal failures they changed the amount that goes into it. WTF?! Link to comment
lvnvbiker
If it was vented they would have avioded the whole blown seal issue, but then dummys like me that turn thier GSA's upside down while taking the occasional dirtnap on single track would be SOL. As to the "lifetime" fill, I had a VW Jetta with an auto trans that was the same way. Sealed from the factory and supposedly good for life, and thankfully I had a 100,000 mile extended warrantee on it cause at 85000 it went BANG. Literally BANG, it grenaded on the 405 freeway at Beach blvd in California and something put a 4x5 hole in the pan on the way out. I left a trail of metal shards to the bottom of the offramp. I am sure glad that BMW realized the error and made changes to thier policy quickly, and then put in the effort of adding a drain to the bottom of the FD housing on the models that followed. There are other manufacturers that would not admit it at all... I for one don't mind having to drop the FD housing to drain it as it gives me access to lube the splines and check my U joints on a regular basis. Now if the front ones and the clutch splines were more easily accessed I'd truely be happy. Link to comment
