Orlando Bound

Jamie and I are flying into Orlando the afternoon of Jan. 26 and flying out the morning of the 30th. Can't think of the name of the hotel we're booked in right now but it's right in that Disney area-within a mile of the Buena Vista Hotel?

Any suggestions from you natives (other than the obvious, of course), of things to do and see? Also, is the obvious, or any particular part thereof, worth the time and $ to do?

I'll be largely on my own as Jamie will be busy with a training conference. I'll have a rental car and a lot of time on my hands.

Les,

Orlando is not Florida. It's a bunch of hotels, convention centers, cheap t-shirt shops (and a big Disney playground) built over reclaimed swamps. Real Florida starts about 25 miles away from Orlando.

I'd love to meet you and Jamie for lunch outside of Orlando and perhaps show you some REAL Florida.

If you'd like to visit Brazil while you're there, just go to the mall.

Cape Canaveral.

Disney after Dark.

Traffic is brutal, plan for that, and then double that.

Have fun.

How about Mt. Dora, Lakeside Inn? 25 miles northwest of Orlando. Lunch, then possibly rent a small pontoon boat across Lake Dora and through the Dora Canal, see osprey, eagles, and maybe a gator or two in their natural habitat.

Tampa Bay isn't Florida either...

Real Florida still exists in parts of the panhandle and certain areas between Ocala and Cedar Key.

Nonetheless, I wish I was going to be here to show you around my native state, but I'm leaving that day for a trip to VA to help out a friend heading for Afghanistan.

Matt,

Very nice.

I hope the weather co-operates with your plans.

Best wishes.

Les,

Have you ever been here before?

If so, what did you see/do?

If not, like Matt sez, there are still some cool places to visit.

Give us a hint at how much time/mileage your allowing.

Daytripping w/return after J is done each day?

Or sumtin elz?

Probably the best thing to do in Orlando is treat it like Las Vegas. There are many fabulous attractions and the reason Florida natives go there:

SeaWorld

Cirque du Soliel

Epcot

Universal Studios

These are the "obvious things" but worthwhile. Not cheap though. But cheaper than losing your money on Vegas gambling. :D

True Florida natives hate theme parks!

If you want passive entertainment go to the theme parks. If you want local culture and color, Orlando is a black hole...

Da.............anyone on this (hint) motorcycle forum....maybe think that with ALL the (hint) motorcycles that we have just laying around especially in Northern Florida that maybe a (hint) motorcycle ride might be in order ????? after all Les is our queen mother/MAMA HOON................

So you'll be delivering a bike to her hotel so she can ride with us?

Thanks all. I'll PM my contact info and would love to see anyone who can find the time. Leaving Orlando for day trips is fine with me. I will have a rental car.

As far as the bikes go, I'm afraid it's a no go for me. When I broke my wrist I did some heavy damage to the ligaments and tendons. As you might expect, the bone was perfectly healed in 6 weeks but now, after 7 months, the soft tissue is still giving me fits. I was told to expect it to take a year before things were all healed up and it looks as if they may have been right--curse them!

In the meantime you all get together and start swapping lies. That should warm the air.
