Winter Olympics

The excitement builds in this neck of the woods. The snow is falling on the local mountains in holy buckets. The fabulous buildings are completed, and it shall be the biggest and best thing that ever happend here.

The one and only disappointment is that the women ski jumpers will not be competing. I can't understand how the IOC, Vanoc and the courts could possibly come to this decision. It seems transparent that something has overtaken the real values of the Olympics.

Also a female skier has set a record at Whistler, beating all records for any gender. Easy for me to say, but could you imagine the honor of the men's ski jumpers if they put their skis down at the top of the mountain in support of the women, who could beat them given the chance!

The opportunity to compete would be over shadowed buy such a gesture. In ten years who will remember who won gold in this event? Every one would remember who didn't jump in support of the 14 women who have been denied the opportunity to compete.

After all isn't honor what is it all about?

Good point. Thanks for speaking out. I like your idea of the men protesting this unconstitutional decision. It boggles the mind that the IOC is above our laws.

Where is the Human Rights Commission when we really need them.

I guess I missed this news. Why will they not be competing?

They took this issue to court, they lost. They also have lost their appeal. One of the women labeled the IOC as the Taliban of the Olympics, she was in tears on prime time news

women-ski-jumpers-lose-appealThe international body voted in 2006 not to include women's ski jumping at the Games, saying the sport had not met the required technical criteria and to add them would violate elements of the Olympic charter that govern the operations of a Games.

What ever the criterian is, and in anothr link, there is a thread saying that there are not enough events for women to give them place in the "ski jumping community".

Nice to know Ken H's tax dollars are subsidising the Olympics this time around, rather than mine.

I truely love the winter Olympics, & watch them every year. But as a hosting country, it's just too much of a monetary loss.

Yeah they are an economic looser in the direct immediate tangible sense. There’s probably other less quantifiable benefits; the prestige, exposure for a city, improvement (if they pull it off well!) of the hosts city’s image as ‘do-ers’, long-term use of the facilities left behind, others.

But it’s really more about the sports, spirit of the games, and entertainment in the end. Not everything has to be profitable to be worthwhile doing in life.

I get more torqued at cities spending millions of tax dollars to build sports stadiums for private (usually football) teams so those private enterprises can make billions while the cities loose millions on the arenas, than I do about the Olympics.

FWIW I agree the IOC not allowing a women’s ski jumping team is a travesty. But certainly the B.C. / Canadian courts had no jurisdiction. The men protesting would be cool, but unlikely I suspect.

Maybe Stephen Colbert should get behind them like he has the US Speed Skating team!?!

One of the problems is that very few women outside of Canada and the USA are involved with this sport. Olympic sports should be played in a large number of countries, or so says the IOC.

The obvious solution is to allow women in the men's competition. But it is probably too late for that, because it is probably too late to qualify.

Some of the sports do not need to be gender specific. Some obviously do. Ski jumping should not be one of them considering a woman has set one of the records at Whistler. It's never too late to do the right thing.
