Handguards for R1200ST

Had my new (2nd hand) 2005 R1200ST for about 3 weeks now and its definitely got many good points compared to my old'94 R1100RS. But with winter coming I'm already starting to miss the old GS handguards that I had on the old RS. The newer bikes heated grips are way better than the old one but you still feel that wind chill on the outside of the fingers especially once its raining and the gloves get wet. So has anyone managed to fix handguards onto 1200ST ? was thinking of a set of Barkbusters Storm S7 handguards but there's a couple of potential gotyas. 1) They come with either 6mm or 8mm bolts to go into end weight nuts - but I checked and my 1200ST has whopping great 10mm bolts and a 10mm ain't gonna fit through the Barkbuster's aluminium bar. I guess I could either drill out the hole in the Barkbusters aluminium bar to 10mm (but possibly not enough metal) or perhaps remove the original end weight and fit new ones with 6mm or 8mm threads. Anyone know if it is possible to remove the original 10mm bar-end weight nuts from inside the bars ?

2) Assuming I did overcome problem 1 I am not convinced there would be enough clearance between the top front edge of the handuard and the screen.

Anyone out there tried fitting the Barkbusters to a 1200ST ?

Or has anyone tried using the earlier (withdrawn) handguards off a 1200GS ? I would imagine I could get a 2nd hand pair of those from Motorworks for not much money and then it would probably just be a case of making up a bracket to hold the inboard end of the guard to the mirror mount. But again there still may not be enough clearance to the screen. Anyone tried this ?

But I suspect I may have to setting for no handguards and just use my electric inner gloves once it gets really cold. I presume I can still fit their power supply cable accross the battery terminals just like on the pre-Canbus bikes ?

Any advice appreciated.

Yes it can be done. I took them off our ’05 GS and sold them to a guy with an ST. You have to use the upper portion of the GS mirror mounts also to get the inside shield mount point. But given that, the shields, the bar end bolts and washers, it’s a direct fit.

Finally got to doing this mod. Here's a couple of pics:

Got a pair of the old (unsafe !) handguards for £20 from ebay. They only came with the the bar-end mount and so I had to make up the mounts for the inside to attach to my mirror mounts. On the throttle side I had to use my dremmel to take about 0.5mm off the outside of the bar-end mount otherwise the standard torx bold is not long enough to get threaded to the inside of the bar. Also on my particular bike a have a large Wunderlich screen - so I have actually had to cut slots in the hardguards to allow clearance to the large screen on full lock. I have then filled in the gap with loose duct tape.

OK so its a bit o a bodge but this is a "workhorse" bike and they still get the job done of keeping the cold wind off the backs of my hands. I am well pleased and the bike is now nearly ready to take over winter duties from my old R1100RS when it finally dies !
