smiller Posted May 12, 2009 Posted May 12, 2009 We've already been told how much safer we'll be when public cameras are everywhere, and now the next step... computers deciding whether our behavior is acceptable. I feel more secure already.
Dave McReynolds Posted May 12, 2009 Posted May 12, 2009 This might be a great business to be in, because if these systems become widespread, they almost guarantee their own obsolescence. According to the attached article, they are programmed to spot certain mannerisms that might indicate that a cashier is passing goods to a friend without charging for them. The reason the mannerisms exist is because they were of no consequence in the past. Once there are negative consequences associated with the mannerisms, people will quit using them. They won't quit stealing; they will just quit doing things that the computer is programmed to pick up. Then there will be another round of programming to pick up whatever new mannerisms replace the old ones. I still say a little lopping of hands would be a great deterrent to theft.
