Deek Posted May 12, 2009 Posted May 12, 2009 I have the OEM BMW/Garmin Nav system on my '06 RT. I just ordered Garmin 2720 to replace/augment my Garmin 2610 for car/truck use. Although I do not plan to use the 2720 on the BMW, does anyone know if the 2720 has the small audio plug so I could have the speech routed through my headset? I understand the buttons on the left side of the BMW cradle would not work with the 2720, but having speech come through would make the 2720 a good backup. I really think having the Garmin sound through the helmet is a safety issue.
Redbrick Posted May 12, 2009 Posted May 12, 2009 Yes......It is part of my power harness with the connector shoe....I use it with my Arizona Al ear plugs when specific directions needed........

I did not post too well in my original. I should have asked if the 2720 has that small output jack on the GPS itself; not the accessory power cable that some use to provide 12 vdc and audio. I wish I had a picture, but the audio ouput jack is on the bottom left side of the GPS I believe. That's the one I'm wondering is on the 2720 like on my BMW NavIII GPS.

The 2720 does not have an audio jack on the GPS itself - the audio jack is on the motorcycle 12V power cable that comes with the motorcycle mount kit.

As additional clarification, buy a 2730 if you want an external Streetpilot audio jack as shown in my forum pics here. True, Garmin audio can be heard using Garmin's hard wire cable which can be purchased at discount here (I bought two cables from them). My thought is buy the 2730 if intent is to add XM via GXM30 antenna/receiver and/or likewise use in your vehicle for XM (requires aux input jack on vehicle head unit or an adapter cable to achieve this - as I have done with my Nissan's OEM truck radio and Jeep TJ's aftermarket Pioneer radio). If these capabilities aren't important, buy a 2720 (I own both). Jeff

So I won't be able to use the 2720 too easily as a Nav III backup as far as audio goes. That's okay, the Nav III is still working just fine, and if it dies I can rig up something with the audio for the 2720.
Deek Posted May 13, 2009 Author Posted May 13, 2009 Thanks Jeff. The 2720 will work fine for me, since it will replace a Garmin 2610 (no 3d, no text to speech) in my truck. I don't need XM or the other features on the 2730. I also don't need the BlueTooth capability of the Nav III. Nothing wrong with my 2610 except I have come to really like the text to speech of my Nav III. Plus, the software is different enough between the Nav III and the 2610 that my ol' brain will welcome the very similar operation of the Nav III and 2720. The original audio output question was just curiosity.....if my Nav III failed I'd like to have a ready backup, which the 2720 could be, but without audio (unless I use the power/audio cable). But that's only 3% why I'm replacing the 2610; the main reason is GPS operation. Thanks for the clarification and additional info.

Deek, Even though the NavIII cradle buttons will not work with the 2720, as you know, it is quite possible that the audio jack on the cradle will still work. it is certainly worth the experiment. I keep thinking the audio outlet is on the Nav III, and not the cradle itself. I've been down in FL without my bike so I can't see it. And you can bet I'll try the 2720 on it when I get back! The Garmin 2720 I ordered and had sent down here (Pensacola NAS RV park) arrived a few minutes ago so I'll playing with that the rest of the afternoon until cocktails at 1700!
Deek Posted May 15, 2009 Author Posted May 15, 2009 The Garmin 2720 arrived........it does not have the audio output jack on it like I hoped it might. I will try it with the BMW NAV III's cradle to see if how it works.......never can tell! However, one problem surfaced for which I was not prepared. I use the following GPS units and PC Mapsource City Navigator North America (CNNA)software. Garmin 2610 using CNNA v7 BMW Nav III (a Garmin 28xx) using CNNA NT 2009 Garmin 2720 using CNNA NT 2008 Garmin Questing using CNNA 2008 The problem results as none of these versions of Mapsource is compatible with the the others. I had hoped I could use CNNA NT 2009 with both the Garmin/BMW 28xx and the Garmin 2720, but that is not the case. So while the features of the 28xx and 2720 are very similar, I STILL have to be careful to create routes on my PC using the appropriate software version (ie, CNNA NT 2008 or 2009) before downloading routes into the GPS. Not a big problem, but something of which you need to be aware if you use several different GPS units like I do.
scottgr Posted May 15, 2009 Posted May 15, 2009 The output on the 2720 power/audio cable is a 2.5mm mono jack.
