milesandmiles Posted May 12, 2009 Posted May 12, 2009 Has anyone had any experience with either of these types?
Linz Posted May 12, 2009 Posted May 12, 2009 Nope. Have you checked out the replacement cost of disks for R series BMW's? I'll stay with stock pads thanks. Linz
smiller Posted May 12, 2009 Posted May 12, 2009 Metallic pads usually have considerably more initial bite and lower lever effort than Kevlar, but can be somewhat harder on the rotors. Also some theorize about issues with ABS although I personally have never experienced any negative effects. I would say that if you are happy with your current braking performance than stick with organic or Kevlar pads, and if you want more braking power then try the metallic. My preference is for the more 'sportbike' feel of the metallic but most don't consider them necessary on a bike like the RT, and in most cases that's probably true.
Ham Posted May 13, 2009 Posted May 13, 2009 I went with the Carbone Lorriane SBK5 sintered pads up front (HH rated) and the regular CL sintered pads for the rear and am very pleased with the bite and progressiveness. Ordered em from Beemerboneyards.
Joe Frickin' Friday Posted May 13, 2009 Posted May 13, 2009 EBC's "HH" pads. less lever effort, much easier on the fingers in tight twisty stuff. A lot of people wig out at the idea of rotors being destroyed in just a day or two of riding with such pads, but mine somehow lasted over 100,000 miles on HH pads before hitting the wear limit.
georgeb Posted May 13, 2009 Posted May 13, 2009 How about this hijack? I recently replaced my fronts with EBC HH pads and after my accident, the right side pads must have gotten soaked in the fork oil that leaked because I am getting a dark resin like substance on only the right side rotor. Can I replace just the right side or do i need to replace both after just a few hundred miles?

Hi Mitch, just as an aside really. I normally run EBC HH pads and love them, I also get through rear pads REAL quick. I have rebuilt caliper and sliding mech, also BMW replaced the rear caliper early on in the bikes life, so now I just accept it. However, just for 'Science', I tried runing non HH EBC pads in the rear. WOW what a difference....LESS feel, always a dusty back wheel and only 1/3 of the mileage that I get from the harder pads. I'm back on the HH pads as you may have guessed. Andy
AndyS Posted May 14, 2009 Posted May 14, 2009 Part numbers for the EBC HH pads? Cheers Steve Rear are (for R1150RT) EBC FA363HH (1 set needed) Front are (for R1150RT) EBC FA335HH (2 sets needed) Andy
