Michaelh Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 Tuning up my 96 RT after a long winter. I adjusted the valves and some other little jobs, but can't sync the throttle bodies. Bike barely runs its' so rough. Loosened the throttle cable on the right side, cleaned the adjusting screws, then ran them in then out 2 turns. Attached the carb stix and the left body is way high and the right way low. Turning the adjusting screws in or out, either side dies not make much difference. I'm stump;ed; any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated. thanks
John844 Posted May 12, 2009 Posted May 12, 2009 1. double check all of the throtle cables are fully seated at each end and on both sides. 2. Make sure there is not a rock wedged into the curved cable guide on the throtle bodies. 3. Make sure that there is slack in both cables and both TB are fully closed.

T__ Posted May 12, 2009 Posted May 12, 2009 Michaelh, good info above.. I will just add a little more.. If the choke is on (or partially on) the BBS (brass screws will have little effect on the balance as the throttle plates will be open above the idle air control area).. Make sure the choke (fast idle lever) is completely off before adjusting anything.. Twisty
Ken H. Posted May 12, 2009 Posted May 12, 2009 Is it not in sync at idle or OK at idle but out above idle? If the former, what the tips given so far are designed to determine is if both TBs are sitting on their idle stop screws at fully closed throttle. (Easiest to check this when the bike is off.) If this isn’t right, nothing else will fall into place. If it is in sync at idle, but not when you go above idle, it most likely some sort of a cable issue. Then mentioned dreaded and common issue of a cable not seated correctly in its adjuster, one side or the other too tight, or similar.
Michaelh Posted May 13, 2009 Author Posted May 13, 2009 Thanks, friends, and the answer is... Most of the above! #1, grit, crud and small pebbles lodged in the left side cable cam. Small, but significant. #2, some cable binding, and cables not slacked enough for sync; plates not fully closed. Test drive unbelievable; immediate roll off and power I havent seen in years.
