Need O-Rings

Can anyone tell me the size/where to buy the tiny o-rings inside the valve cover that holds the mounting bolts to the cover?

I've looked at all the illustrated parts diagrams (Max , et. al.) and they're not listed.

Is this a part I'll have to get from an auto parts store?

What o-rings? There's the rubber bushing that goes under the metal bushing on the bolt - # 9 in this diagram and p/n 11127654978.

On the INSIDE of the valve cover there's a tiny o-ring that slips over the pointy end of the valve cover mounting bolt (number 4 in the diagram).

This tiny 0-ring keeps oil from seeping out along the bolt & also keeps the mounting bolt from falling out on the floor when you turn the cover over to inspect the inside of the cover.

The tiny 0-ring is obviously not pictured in the diagram, in fact, the parts guy from a dealer in the Phoenix area said the dealer didn't stock that 0-ring. That's why I asked for help.

Thanks anyway.

The only part is part no. 9. You probably have a broken part no. 9 which made you think that there was an o-ring. When part no. 9 breaks, it separates into two pieces. One of which may make you think it is an o-ring.

Try a dash size 010. It has a 6 mm ID and a 1 mm cross section.

If that is too big, they get smaller as the number goes down. 008 will be a really tight fit but might work.

having replaced this before...#9 is only one piece. When properly installed, part of it is on the outside of the valve cover, and the rest of it is on the inside.

no o-ring.

There is no O-ring. That's why your dealer didn't find one. You can buy new grommets, break them like the ones you have now are broken, and then you'll have your O-ring.

I did not know that. I guess mine are broken as well.

It's not uncommon. Although the reason isn't completely apparent to me, once the inside part breaks off (usually from tipover) they leak. One would think that the remaining outer washer would be enough to seal the oil in, but it isn't.

I keep a bag of these things around. I probably replace one or two of them on every third bike.

O.K. You guys arre way more experienced with Boxers than I. I came over form Harley.

Come to think of it, the reason I'm doing this is because the bike tipped over twice in the sloped driveway, once of each side, and scraped the valve covers. That's probably when the grmmets broke. Interesting though, that neither valve cover is weeping.

I bought a couple used covers and they're at the bead blaster today. I'll then paint them, get new gaskets all the way around, and install the next time I need to do a valve adjustment.

Thanks for all the help. This list's collective wisdom is a Godsend for a newb like me.

Just whipped the bolts out of my R1150RT. There is no small O ring. Just the grommet as per the illustrated parts catalogue.

Your bolt should have a steel shoulder on it that bottoms on the head, this keeps the mechanic from overcompressing the rubber bushing. This shoulder will keep the bolt from falling out.

I wonder if yours have been replaced with non-BMW part because owner removed highway peg bracket or something and the originals were lost.

Just a guess?

Hi Ragtoplvr, you are missing my point. I took my bolts out to confirm what other posters have intimated. As original there is no little O rings on these bolts.

And as I said, they are 'as per the illustrated parts catalogue'.
