hatrack Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 has anyone come up with a piece of harddware that shims up the dogbone that adjusts the seat on a RT so you can have something in the middle of the two settings?
hopz Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 Yes, I have done that. I insert a wooden dowel across the "bone holder" and that keeps the front of the seat about 3/8th or so higher than stock. It is a piece of wood about the diameter of a round pencil but of more dense and stronger than a pencil. The result is that the "slide forward" phenomenon is greatly diminished and the everyone down there is much happier. As a bonus, the rear bump stops will go into the lower step preserving the low setting in the back retaining the benefits of the Low seat in the Low position- for my altitude challenged stature.
SirAubergine Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 I used the same trick with my seat and it helped. I still wasn't satisfied and finally ended up ordering a Sargent low seat. Problem completely solved! I didn't realize, until riding on the firmer Sargent seat, how much I was scrunching forward and back on the soft factory seat due to accel/decel forces. Added bonus is better bike response to rider input. I didn't anticipate this effect and I think it makes this already fine handling bike even more fun and effortless to ride. Comfort is a very subjective matter and time spent making small adjustments to the factory seat can pay big rewards in long-term comfort. For me it helped, but wasn't enough. I think a bigger issue than what brand a seat might be is that most aftermarket seats are made with firmer foams. The added support of firm foams when properly shaped to fit a particular body type can provide benefits beyond comfort. I refer to my experience with Sargent only because their product works well for me. Hope this helps! Forrest
Alan D Posted May 12, 2009 Posted May 12, 2009 I think aftermarket has stiffer foam and I think a little wider, flatter surface. Think tractor seat.
KTM_95 Posted May 12, 2009 Posted May 12, 2009 Do you guys have any pictures showing how you did that shim? I want to try this.
hopz Posted May 12, 2009 Posted May 12, 2009 Pictures? I got no stoopid pictures... get a stick and put it in there*. If it does not work- take it out... Better yest see me in Torrey this Friday and I will show you. * just a little ribbing... Seriously find something that will fit in the grove of the dog bone holder- put it in, reinstall the seat. You could even use a long metal bolt, or brass tube, or two short bolts with nuts- one on each side... get creative. This is not like high science. P.S. if you are going for Low... you can take off the rubber bump stops too. Gives you another 1/4th maybe. I could tell no difference with regard to seat movement or cushion when I took mine out. By the way, my seat is a custom with three different foam densities for different places. Works for me.
