08 R1200RT 6000mi service requirements

I've got an 08 R1200RT that's just hitting the 6k mi mark, and I've seen some postings mentioning that the 08 RT does NOT require a valve adjustment or throttle body adjustment for this service. Which would mean simply changing oil and checking wear and tear, ie I could just do it myself.

I called my dealer to verify this and he said, nope, the 2008 still requires the full 6k service (valves, throttle body, etc).

Anyone know where I can verify what the actual BMW service requirements are (specifically for the 2008)?

Thanks,

Richard

Actually, you can do it yourself if you want, regardless of what needs to be done. You just need the right set of tools and somebody to walk you through it. If there is a tech day close by, that's a great place to go. They won't do the work, but many people there will help you out. (help me figure out how to do valve adjustments on the '04 boxer).

Another great source is the videos that Jim Von Baden has produced. There are several sources for this well made video that walks you through the process of doing the 6 and 12K services.

You can download the maintenance schedules at sites like A&S BMW. Only question is whether they're the most up to date versions, but you can always check the version number on the document then ask your dealer for a copy of his latest.

Those services need to be performed at the following intervals (according to my BMW Service Interval Sheet)

600

Initially at 6000 and then every 12,000 miles afterward.

So that would mean: 18,000, 30,000, 42,000....

Depending on which ones you read, you could get the impression that it is required every 6K, but it is actually only required at the first 6K and then every 12K afterward.

+1 for Jim's DVD, plus I have the Haynes Manual for the R1200 series bike. Between the two I do all my own maint.

Unless I misread you, you seem to be suggesting that some sort of service is only required every 12,000 miles. If that's what you meant, that's incorrect. Some sort of service is required every 6,000 miles; it's just that one is called a "service" and the other is called an "inspection". They alternate, so one, or the other, is required every 6,000 miles.

I use to think as you do. The Haynes manual says only 12K miles on the valve adjust and sync. I hear what you are saying, but, that doesn't make any sense...

The maintenance schedule says, and I quote:

"Initially at 10,000 km, then every 20,000 km; annually" The inspection is said to be every 20,000 km..

That is direct from the sheet..

That to me is done at 6K then every 12K afterward...

You are only looking at half the service schedule, the BMW Service is done every 20,000km and inbetween is the BMW Inspection which is done every alternate 20,000km. There is also a BMW Annual Inspection which is designed for bikes that do not do many miles so the all bikes will still at least have a service annualy.

Initial service at 600 [or as owner's manual now states between 300 - 750] miles...then inspection at 6,000 miles and service at 12,000 miles...then inspection again at 18,000 miles and another service at 24,000 miles...every 6,000 miles it is either time for an inspection or a service...I do them for a living.

Motodan,

What constitutes an "inspection" versus a service? This may be the issue.
