Matts_12GS Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 I have just bought a new Z550 and put in an 8 GB SD card. I noticed that it seems to take a good 4-5 minutes from the GPS being switched on to when it's rendering maps/routes. I have about 4 GB of music files on the SD as well as routes, some pois, etc. Is this a matter or organization of my data or a problem with my GPS?
Skywagon Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 Hmmm. not sure but not normal. Just checked mine and it boots in 37 seconds. I have an 8gb card with 600+ songs. There are three things that come to mind. Maybe you loaded your map source to the SD card, maybe you have songs on the Zumo drive and have filled it, maybe you added some picture file and it you made it your boot up page...It could be large and slow. If you can't figure it out go to the Zumoforum.com and I am sure they can figure it out. I would connect it to my pc and look at the configuration of the Zumo then the SD card. Good luck.
RSR Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 It scans the card for new files at boot up you think 4 gig slows it down try a 16 gig, I learned my lesson the expensive way. (Anybody want to buy a 16 gig sd card hardly used.)I have the best results putting my tunes on several 2 gig cards and changing them like 8 tracks, Oops Im dating myself.
RET2 Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 Matt head on over to the ZUMO FORUM site they know it all
Effjay Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 Matt, How long does it take to boot up w/o SD card installed? If significantly less, that's your answer. If you have mucho music loaded on SD in one large file folder, try instead breaking into smaller file folders using Media Monkey's free download. I have prox 600 MP3 music cuts loaded in smaller sub-folders by genre saved in M3U format this way to my Zumo. Jeff BTW, credit goes to Zumoforums for information sharing. Registration is required for maximum forum access - but its worth the effort...
stubble! Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 Jeff's comments on the folder thing might be the ticket. Make sure the music is in in subfolders by artist or something, or even test with some folders like 1,2,3,4,5 etc. Even so, mine is slow to boot all the way (around 1-2 minutes wit h950 songs on SD).
hopz Posted May 12, 2009 Posted May 12, 2009 This is a well knows issue. The unit scans the SD card on every boot up. Having a lot of tunes will cause slow start up. Having your mp3 files in a "flat" structure will slow it down even more. Over time I can tell you that a lot of guys have put too much stuff on the SD cards and then wonder why the unit cant handle it. Just recall that when the 550 was designed... SD cards were not that big. I have a 2 gig and that is all I need. YMMV. By flat I mean just one tune after the other. At a minimum, they need to be at least arranged by album... but having said that three layers deep is the maximum. p.s.... I like zumoforums.com too... I am a moderator over there.
Matts_12GS Posted May 12, 2009 Author Posted May 12, 2009 Thanks again all! I have been reorganizing and I spoke with some folks at Garmin suport yesterday and was also told that the Zumo can only handle about 1000 mp3 files regardless of the size card. ~

The Zumo sees files (or tracks) as each different.. If you have 10 albums of 10 songs each that is 100 tracks (or 100 files) the Zumo must search through each on boot up.. If you make each album into a continuous track then the Zumo only has 10 tracks (10 files) to search through at boot up.. Twisty
