bmw tank bag map pocket rip

Well, I should have known better but thought is was cool to have my cat hang out on top of my tank bag while I worked in the garage. He’s my buddy and will spend hours on end out here with me while I surf, study and work on projects. He’s probably slept over two hundred hours on there without a problem.

Tonight I’ve discovered two or three small rips in the plastic covering over the map pocket. They were not there yesterday. Each one is a bit smaller than the head of a match. My assumption is that his claws ripped the plastic when he was startled by a garage door opening. The holes are very near the front of the bag and probably will not present a problem while in motion, but I’d like to get them sealed just in case the bike is ever parked, with the bag on, in a hard downpour.

My first thought was to just put a small piece of clear packing tape on the underside of the plastic. But I’m thinking the UV rays will deteriorate the tape, over time, and that temperature changes will weaken the adhesive.

Is anyone aware of a good technique to seal this type of material?

3M must have some kind of clear film that you could use. They put it on the front end of cars to protect the paint from stones and bugs.

If the holes are far enough forward so a repair won't optically block the map could you wipe clear silicone into the holes?
