Gerard Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 I traded my 1100 last year for a new 1200RT and I really miss the top case. I use the bike a lot for commuting to town (Boston) and would be nice to put in the laptop + few other stuff I use for business. In my quest for a new top case, I found products from BMW, GIVI, HEPCO BECKER and now COOCASE. They all have the 50-52 Liter range. I like the BMW most but the $900 price is insane... I was wondering if I could get recommendations from any members of this group who purchase one of these products and what are pluses and minuses. Thanks Gerard
bayoubengal Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 Some good info on that thread but no info on the CooCase. Any experiences out there? I'm in the same boat asking the same questions. The pics in the thread show a great look when you match a Givi with a black or grey RT, but I have Piedmont Red. Not sure how that would look. Considering a Givi or Coo and painting the lid to match. I am a new to my area BMW owner. (My LT was when I was in San Antonio). Point being I have no established roots to either of the 2 ATL area dealers. I asked them to sell me a 49L case with a 20% discount. Win-Win. I get a case that is still crazy expensive, but at a price I was willing and able to buy. The don't make much but in return, they get a new BMW customer that will bring an RT in every 6000 miles, is interested in a 650GS for the wife and son, and will likely buy the new LT replacement in about 3 years. These same dealers spend 10s of thousands of dollars per year advertsising to get folks with my demographics in their store. And I'm offering to do it for free. Just accept a low profit sale on 1 item. Sorry, 10% max. For $90 lower profit on an item, they miss the chance to lock a new cutomer. And the options are not sell it 80% of list or 90% of list. It is sell it at 80% of list, make a customer happy, lock him in as "their customer", or not sell one at all. I'm actually motivated getting motivated to find a tch day and buy the parts on line now... I digress, any info on the Coo would be much apprecaited.
brick_haus Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 I held out till a member here listed a BMW one in the classified section for $400. Great deal and mucho savings.
Dundee387 Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 I got my NEW BMW 49 liter topcase for $725 on ebay. Keep looking.. It took me a while to find it. Still alot of $$, but better than the $895 SRP. that alot of dealers want.
Frustrated_Diver Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 About 6 months ago i bought a CooCase after reading the write up on it in BMW ON. It got returned. The main reason was that it's mounting hardware would not have worked on my R1200RT without a trip to Lowe's to try and jury rig up something. Also, i thought the case was rather flimsy. So i bought a used Givi and hate it too but at least its mounting hardware was compatible. There are some problems i'm having with it. First, and foremost, the latch design stinks. One time i accidentally got a bit of my backpack under the locking mechanism and though that i was going to have to take a saw to the darn thing to get it open. Getting a gloved finger under the latch cam to pry it off its catch can be frustrating. And, it has to be locked to have the lid latched. Also, and this is admittedly minor, the lid is limited to opening no more than 90 degrees. It would be nice if it would open just a bit more so that it would stay open. Oh, and the dim brake lights quit working -- something i really wanted back there. And one last gripe -- the emblem on the top leaks water inside! Search for the BMW case. You will be happier.
JayW Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 I held out till a member here listed a BMW one in the classified section for $400. Great deal and mucho savings. This is exactly what I did. It is very well made and I really like the design and functionality. As a bonus, my key even fit it perfectly. Go figure. Jay
swilson Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 Shop used. I got one in mint condition last year off Craigslist. I think I paid $450.
RoadJunkie Posted May 12, 2009 Posted May 12, 2009 Shop used. I got one in mint condition last year off Craigslist. I think I paid $450. This is a good point. Think of yourself as leasing the top box because you can always sell it when you're done!!
Rob F. Posted May 13, 2009 Posted May 13, 2009 Whatever it takes, get the BMW top case. It is worth every penny even if you have to pay full price. I bought mine from BMW of San Diego off of Ebay where they let you send in your own offer and I was able to get mine for around $725. The fit, finish and integration and build quality is unsurpassed anything that is out there. You can't go wrong and you won't have any problems. Its massive size will swallow anything you put in it. Best of luck.

They do pop up from time to time.

I'm guessing that you didn't buy the Givi E193 mounting kit... It makes mounting relatively easy. I had the S48 and it worked just fine... yes, quite a bit flimsier than the 49L and not as convenient to open/close/remove/attach. The big reason why I ended up selling it and getting the 49L was the additional 2" of much-needed pillion space gained with it. Yes, it was a very steep price to pay, but well worth it IMO.

I put in a request and had to wait a month or so until one was available.

Best of luck. -1 on that. I've seen the BMW case and I'm not that impressed with the build quality - it's certainly not worth the price compared to some alternatives. About the only advantage it has is that you don't need a separate key. I have the Givi 52 liter and I'm very happy with it. Although it doesn't look like it, the Givi actually has more capacity that the BMW case. And unless you happen to have a silver bike, the Givi actually looks better.
