USAF1 Posted May 10, 2009 Posted May 10, 2009 Wade is somewhere just outside Blythe, CA., on his way to Phoenix right now. Evidently the bolt holding his rear caliper dropped out somewhere along the road and the caliper rotated (OUCH!!!) and is locking the rear end up and giving him a real headache. His cell phone is 425-750-3412 and I just talked with him.....HE IS NOT INJURED!! He called me about 20 minutes ago.....but because I was on the lawn mower doing my front 40 for the first time of the year....I missed him. Anyway I finally got thru and made sure that he checked his BMW Anonymous book to see if anybody is in that area who can help. He'd forgotten... hey...it was the stress! I said I'd post here and see if we can turn up someone....but, if I posted this where it's not going to receive the most attention....hopefully one of the BIG DUDES will move it where it'll do the most good. I think he said he was close to the Hampton Inn...which is at 900 W Dobson Way. I have no clue what exit he was on when all this happened. He was headed there to see about a room, and to call his Road Side Assistance to see what help is available thru them. Seems that I'm the only BMW guy in his cell phone.....how my head swells with pride!! Hang in there buddy....somewhere the cavalry is on the way.....listen for the bugles............. Pat
johnlt Posted May 10, 2009 Posted May 10, 2009 Try your local Ace Hardware store. They have a good inventory of metric hardware including stainless steel. They probably will have something that you can make work until you get to a dealer. In that it is Saturday evening, most dealers are closed Sunday and Monday so you may need to make the temporary fix last for a few days. I'm in Tucson, several hundred miles away but if I can help, I'd be happy to. Good luck, johnlt
USAF1 Posted May 10, 2009 Author Posted May 10, 2009 Ladies and Getnlemen......Wade is good to go!! Got over to some sort of tool store and got a "big honkin screwdriver"....a nut and bolt and got her all put back together again. Don't know how long he'll last....so ya'll say your prayers....thanks to those that offered and tried to get over to him. Bless you people Pat
Kitsap Posted May 10, 2009 Posted May 10, 2009 Ran to Checker to get a T45 that I thought I had on the bike Ran across the street to ACE and picked up an allen head bolt and washer to do the fix. Jeez I feel like an idiot. Now for the kicker. Our Allstate KOA gold plated towing only covers $250 of towing. The unlimited is for RV's only according to the gal I spoke on the phone with. Just an FYI. I'm glad I didn't need it for a real emergency.
Firefight911 Posted May 10, 2009 Posted May 10, 2009 Hell of a fix Wade but, you really didn't need to flip your bike upside like a bicycle to fix it. I'm just sayin'!!!!
Firefight911 Posted May 10, 2009 Posted May 10, 2009 And how did you get the tools to levitate like that?
smiller Posted May 10, 2009 Posted May 10, 2009 The unlimited is for RV's only according to the gal I spoke on the phone with. Generally, in any customer service situation where you hear something silly like that you need to escalate to a supervisor. Not only is it incorrect, but doesn't even make logical sense. An RV has unlimited coverage, but your motorcycle (or passenger car, or truck) doesn't? Contrary to all published literature? Doubtful. Anyway, glad you're back on the road. Your fix was a better option than even a free tow.
Kitsap Posted May 10, 2009 Posted May 10, 2009 And how did you get the tools to levitate like that? It's amazing what you can do when the mojo kicks in. Everything around here closes at 6pm. This all started at around 5:30 and then I wasted 15 minutes with the insurance bozos.
lvnvbiker Posted May 10, 2009 Posted May 10, 2009 I am glad you got it fixed, your 200+ from me but if you did not I would have made the ride down in the morning with the parts to get you moving again. On your way home if you swing by Vegas I can show you some cool spots and if you don't mind dogs I have a couch available for you.
RET2 Posted May 10, 2009 Posted May 10, 2009 Ya need to tell that gal from your towing co. that the bike is an RV. Atleast mine is, glad everything turned out good. Kinda funny how the "oh chit" kinda stuff happens at closing time?
Kitsap Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 I have to say the folks that populate this board are the best. The PM's hit the spot and the offers were generous. Thanks all CrazyCanuck, the master of the Big Green Egg from Bakersfield gets a free milkshake in Torrey Cheers all.
Shaman97 Posted May 12, 2009 Posted May 12, 2009 Now for the kicker. Our Allstate KOA gold plated towing only covers $250 of towing. Glad I didn't need to test that limit.
KMG_365 Posted May 14, 2009 Posted May 14, 2009 Now for the kicker. Our Allstate KOA gold plated towing only covers $250 of towing. The unlimited is for RV's only according to the gal I spoke on the phone with. Just an FYI. I'm glad I didn't need it for a real emergency. I was told the same thing. Glad I didn't need to test that limit. The "default" is $250.00 and Allstate will tell you that when you call. If you bought the KOA RV plan I've recommended and used for FAR more than $250 worth of towing, you need to be persistent as the flunky on the phone has to go ask daddy for permission. But they will get it for you if you are insistent and don't back down. It's kind of a beschissen way to treat you, but it seems that KOA has negotiated a better plan for their customers, but still rely on Allstate to administer their plan. So when you call Allstate for a tow, you get Allstate's plan by default . . . until you make it clear to them you have the KOA with unlimited towing for ANY vehicle. Insist on talking to a supervisor if needed. BTDT
