Perlova Posted May 9, 2009 Posted May 9, 2009 I changed my gearbox lube after 8,000 miles and the magnetic drain plug looks like this. Is this normal or an unusual amount of wear? Link to drain plug photo...
philbytx Posted May 9, 2009 Posted May 9, 2009 IMHO it doesn't look great but have you experienced any symptoms like bad shifting? How many miles on the bike? If you haven't experienced shifting issues, I would check again after 500 miles to see if you have a further accumulation of metal on the magnet. Any shifting issues plus more metal on the magnet, especially, in such a short time would indicate accelerated wear and/or an impending failure.
smiller Posted May 10, 2009 Posted May 10, 2009 I wouldn't go into panic mode yet but that is more material than I would like to see. I'd put another 5,000 or so miles on it and send an oil sample off to Blackstone. If the report comes back clean then you're good to go. How many total miles on the bike?

boatzo Posted May 10, 2009 Posted May 10, 2009 Mine looked like that at 85k miles. At 98k miles I started to see much bigger pieces. See recent threads on the subject. I have stopped riding and have an appointment to get the transmission opened up and checked before any big damage occurs. FWIW.
breyfogle Posted May 10, 2009 Posted May 10, 2009 If you rub the fuzzy bits between your thumb and forefinger, are they hard or soft ? Hard & sharp would indicate a problem. Soft can be ignored.

The pieces did not feel especially hard. Could this be a result of an occasional missed down shift and grinding of gears?
eddd Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 ...Could this be a result of an occasional missed down shift and grinding of gears? Absolutely. Try to preload your shifts, monitor the amount of grinding/missed gears, and as has been suggested, check it again in a few thousand miles.
Ken H. Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 Be worried, be very, very, worried... Just kidding. A fine "fuzz" that can't realy be detected as particles between your fingers is normal.
