Big Mak

I bought a used Big Mak tank bag, which came without instructions. I didn't find instructions at the CycleGadgets website, either:

http://www.cyclegadgets.com/Products/BigMak/bma.asp?bike=R1100RT

Two questions:

1. The bag is secured in the front by the hinge, but is there also supposed to be something to secure it in the back? Won't the bag bounce up while riding if it is just hinged in the front?

2. If I want to ride without the bag, but with the tank rack installed, what should I do about the thin metal plate (about 4" X 8") attached to the hinge? Do I remove it with some tools, or do I just leave it there on the bike while I ride?

There is no attachment for the back. It will bounce a bit.

If you plan on riding without the bag, you can just leave the bracket on, remove it, or use some of the quick detach screws someone was making for it.

Or for day rides this small accessory bag is handy and out of the way.....Don't remember Big Maks name for it but Kathy uses it all the time on her 1150 and doesn't notice any untoward bouncing......

1st off the bag is great, plus they have terrific service.

The bouncing of the bag is hardly noticeable, but when I ride without the bag it was pretty noisy. The plastic plate banged against the bracket. I had to jerry-rig soft bumpers beneath the plate to quiet it down.

Anyone have a more elegant solution?

I use a large rubber band--works fine.

Which bag?

I keep the DSC (Diamond Space Case, small, meant to top other bags) on all the time.

Excellent product.

I must have an older model Big Mak, as my bag won't separate from the bracket. Unless I'm missing something...

I like mine. So well designed.

Mine is not brand new, but I suspect the function for most is like mine...

the bag slips on the plate using a plate shaped 'pocket' on the bottom and has a simple velcro strap to keep it on the mount. Quick on-quick off.

And another daily user of the Diamond case here.

Simple is best. Why I didn't think of this is beyond me, but thanks.

Some times the simplest and most logical solutions escape even the most logical and acute minds.

As an example: for years (many years) I suffered esaing water down the side of the bucket to limit the suds after pouring the car wash soap into the bucket, until a couple of months ago YOU said something about a "splash of soap into the bucket full of water", and epiphany time Duooh! upon me.

Ah, but for "elegance" (one of Vinny’s stated requirements) you must use a color coordinated rubber band. This IS a BMW we're talking about after all!

Now I know why they make the plate black. It's easier to find a rubber band to match!

Not that it helps but these are the quick detach screws someone on the board here made a few years back. Sorry I cant remember who made them.

Yes, he moved back to Germany and I don’t think has been heard from here in a long time. Too bad, they are great. It would be nice if one of our machine shop experts here would back up pick making these again.

When I got my used bag, it was short a couple of screws. I shot an email off to cyclegadgets.com regarding possibly purchasing some, and low and behold a few days later the quantity needed arrived in the mail......sans invoice.
