BMW now makes a LED brake light that is Can-Bus friendly.I guess that after all the complaints someone at BMW saw the light. The parts are the same as the LED's that go on the rear of the RTP but are modified to fit the RT with plug and play installation.

The part is called BMW Deluxe Supplemental LED CAN-BUS Brake Light(what a mouthful)Part #s63000445578 light and 61000445579 wiring harness adapter for the RT.

Just got mine in.As soom as I get a chance I'll install them and post some pictures.

I don't have this, but am interested and when I looked around noticed on Sierra BMWs website that there are model specific part numbers listed, as an fyi: http://www.sierrabmwonline.com/deluxe-supplemental-canbus-brake-light-p-1125.html

I like their Product Description -- "installs easily to your incense plate bracket . . ." I don't use my rear incense plate bracket much, I get a better aromatherapy effect from using the front incense plate bracket . . .

I had one of these on my 1150RT and was happy with it. I would like to have one on my 1200RT but they are a little expensive. I put hyperlites on at half the cost and am happy with them too.

I went with the P3s set up with the voltmeter installed. They mount on the sides of the license plate. They are very bright and cheaper and comes with a great customer service.

There is a recent svc bulletin out from BMW for these lights. There is more than one model/harness. You'll need your vin (to confirm date of mfgr). Also while the RT is pretty much plug and play, the GS requires a flash from the BMW computer to tell the bike it's 'there'. etc, etc, etc.

The new LED is brighter than the 1100/1150 version and a nice asset.

It's interesting.. I had the old BMW version from my 99 K bike. When I sold the bike I removed the LED lights and moved them to my '06 RT not even thinking about the CANBUS at the time. Imagine my surprise when I only found ONE plus wire going to the brake light (and a ground). I hooked up the LED light anyway with both hot wires going to the hot on the brake and low and behold it worked fine.

I did some research on this and found out the brake uses a DC pulse to reduce the brightness (Probably down to RMS 8 volts or so) instead of using a dual filament bulb. Seems that the lower value works fine with the old LED light set. If you have sensitive eyes you can see a VERY slight flicker when in running light mode, but most people I've asked can't see it at all (I'm quite sensitive to it, I think alot of cars on the road with LED lights flicker as well).

Had it on about a year. No issues.. so if you can find the older version...

Hmmm.. after looking I can't even find the old style ones anywhere. I'll post a picture when I get a chance....

I took a cheap way out and this approach works great on the CanBus system of the R1200RT. I bought two-each 4LED lights at a Truck Stop for $9.95 each. They fit right along side the license plate. I wired each one in parallel to the bulb in the stop light. The LED is bright when the tail-light is on--and then when the Brake light is on the LED light gets very bright also. Very interesting.

Those look nice. Me thinks I'll go that route to add lights to my top case. Do you have a 'daytime' pic by chance?

thx

I wonder if it requires any splicing or just plugs inline with the existing harness

Last time I checked there were 3 versions of the license plate Brake/Tail LED(R11xx, CanBus, and R12RTP) and the pricing is different too, with the CanBus/ZFE version being the most expensive (around $120)

Splicing depends on the model year. The newer harness just plugs up to the light & bike harness. The authority harness is it's own quirky animal, and I can't recall the "older" pre-07? R12RT harness setup.

Having ridden behind P3 lights they are pretty darn bright in their own right and have a unique attention grabbing twinkle that's pretty neat.

When I installed my Givi Topcase with the light kit, I measured the voltage of 3vdc running and 12vdc brake. I'm using the 4 incandesent singal filament light tree that can with the light kit and have normal running lights and brake lights when the brake is engaged. 4yrs and no problems or pulsing.

Here you go Dave. There are two bulbs in the tail-light (each are single filament). You just wire wire these bulbs parallel--one to each bulb--and it works great.

it's plug n play: (but just where it plugs in I'm tracking down!)

UPDATE: The wrong harness was shipped, so please excuse the interruption. BMW has redone the harnesses of late and so there's been some confusion - as noted in a previous post about the harnesses. Also, I got mine from A&S for $40 less than Sierria. Also, if you order over $150, not only do you get free shipping, but you also get a free Deltran Battery Tender (while supplies last - it's PINK b/c it a Susan B Koman breast cancer deal)

So again - the harness shown is WRONG for a pre 8/06 RT. Harness shown is for a 8/06-07 K1200GT2; R1200 GS/ADV

I just installed mine. The harness has two connectors that plug into the rear accessory power port harness, a third piggy backs to one of the brake light bulb connectors. Drill a 7/8" hole behind the license plate for the LED connector......Done!

Really dumb question here, since I do not have a rear power outlet is the harness the same? Then again, can I kill two birds with one stone ? (09 RT)

If the wiring is there, look under the seat near the left grab rail for a loose connector.

Well I am going to look tonight, I just bought the like and wiring kit from my BMW dealer. Figure I will :

1) try to find the connector

2) test it before mounting

3) learn which end of the drill is the cutting end

4) go from fender into tire

5) route the wire

6) test it again

7) bolt it all in place

Some of those steps I hope to avoid

OK.

Was this light supposed to have instructions with it? I don't mind installing it but I don't even know which harness I am to connect to, let alone suggested routing of the wire.

Anyone want to throw me a clue?

Posted

I have the RTP LED and have looked at the "CanBus" LED. Neither box (or corresponding harness assemblies) had any instructions. If you have the LED harness that "splits" into a one wire piece and two wire piece this info may be helpful.

The accessory plug connection tag should be marked X9349,X9320 or X9321 (my bike is in the shop tonight so I can't check is the rear one). The pin connected to the brown wire is ground. It's probably on the left side. You should check it with a meter just for grins. The 12V off of this plug will power the running light portion of the LED.

The X9470 connector in the tail section goes to the brake/tail bulbs(2), with a brown ground wire and a grey/black/yellow wire for each bulb. You'll tap "downstream" from this connector since it's on the harness.

If I remember right the grey/black/yellow wire is modulated for the running lamp and then goes high when braking which would require some smarts in the LED unit to recognize. This is probably why the one LED unit costs more.

Hope this helps. YMMV.

Installed.

What I did. I have a 2009 RT without rear accessory socket. Should not matter for those with one.

Remove Seat.

Located the harness on the left side, cut the black tie and then cut the tape holding the accessory plug. Since I did not have the rear socket mine has a long dummy cover which just slides off.

Removed license plate. If you have a fancy surround for your plate it might not fit afterward if the base of it is too tall, I went sans dealer bracket.

Remove two screws holding tail light assembly, left it hanging

Standing at the rear of the bike I pushed the connector to the LED light between the fender and inner black plastic. Its tight, once I lodged the connector between the two pieces I reached from underneath and with some gentle pressure pulled the outer black plastic out till I get the connector through. I left the connector hanging between tire and rear fender.

On my fender there is a push plug in the center hole, relocate that to the bottom hole.

Drill the hole you removed the plug out with a 3/4" wood bit, helps to have a board behind it. Fish the connector from the LED through the new hole.

Mount the LED light to all four screws where the license plate goes, bottom ones first, then put plate on and do top screws.

You can connect the connector hanging down to the one from the LED. There will be a lot of slack at this point.

Pull the black wire from the left rear brake bulb, attach Y spade from LED to that and connect black wire to other side. Slide rubber connector of old connector down.

Now push the internal connector through the gap at the top of where the tail light mounts into the area behind the seat.

Connect the narrow connector to the accessory connector, if you have a rear accessory plug connect it to the other half the of LEDs connector else cap the extra connector with the cap taken off earlier.

I wrapped the wires under the fender, where the LED big connector connects with electrical tape. Up to you, looks like it should survive the dirt anyway.

Push the extra wire hanging between tire and fender up through where you pushed it. If your good you can probably find it up there and tie it down though I doubt it will move.

Put tail light back on with the two screws that come in the back of the signals.

Done.

It is very bright in just the on position. Using the brake it flashes rapidly for a second or two before going solid and even brighter. It is tilted up somewhat which helps it be noticed.

Only thing I cut was some tape and a twist tie.

of my Knight Riderz LED's on my 06RT. $25 a piece. One fit perfectly in the Givi V46 topcase.

Can be purchased Here

I installed these Hyper-Lites soon after I purchased my '05. The price was reasonable, installation was very fast and easy; I couldn't be happier.

Nice looking. What kit did you order and how are they attached to the top of the rear light bracket?
