Smileste Posted May 7, 2009 Posted May 7, 2009 I am heading down to ride the roads around the Palomar Observatory this weekend. Friends tell me it is a lot of fun. I have not been in that area before though, so I'm just wondering what advice (if any) those of you in SoCal might have for Arty (R1100RT) and me? I have been on the Ortega many times, as well as Mt. Baldy and other twisties. I'm out to have an enjoyable ride, not race anybody. Any advice/suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!
RET2 Posted May 7, 2009 Posted May 7, 2009 Howdy, there are 2 ways up Palomar the west way is the tightest and has a length of about 7 + or- miles the east approach is 14 miles long so you can judge the difference. There is a place on top to get light refreshments and if you go a littl further east there is Lake Henshaw and Mesa Grande roard which in my opinion is better that Palomar Mt. Pm me if you want further. Cheers
Smileste Posted May 8, 2009 Author Posted May 8, 2009 Yes, thanks, any details you can provide about routes or roads in that area are appreciated.
Bill_Walker Posted May 8, 2009 Posted May 8, 2009 Check out San Diego County Motorcycle Rides. Personally, I avoid Palomar on the weekends. Too many squids and/or skilled sportbikers going insanely fast. It's knee-down all the way, especially on the South Grade (the more westerly road, which is very tight and twisty. We're talking switchbacks). It's not so bad in the afternoon, though. The East Grade is more open, although still twisty. I'd offer to guide you around, but I'm gonna be too busy getting ready to leave for Torrey. Another time?
Smileste Posted May 9, 2009 Author Posted May 9, 2009 Thanks for the offer to show me the way, and I appreciate the advice. It sounds like there are enough other good roads in the area that I can still have a good time while avoiding the western entrance. I was dodging racing sportbikes on the Angeles Crest one day awhile back, and it wasn't much fun.
TonyTsai Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 its going to be sports bike everywhere on the Palomar, often, you will see some racing Beemer like us taking them out one by one, LOL through halfway of the reaching to mother's kitchen you should have a photographer taking those leaning picture, be prepare and get some good shot of him.
