Smoky Posted May 7, 2009 Posted May 7, 2009 My son is visiting, and one of his friends dropped over. He was riding this bike he just fit this small gas engine. He's built a few, sells them and starts another, and finished this one last night. This was the first ride, and he's breaking in the motor. His previous bike was capable of 45kph, but he says this ones seems slower, but he is still breaking in the motor. They are 80cc, and he had to pull and long steep hill to get here. I think they look like wonderful fun, and maybe I will build one too. What do you think??
russell_bynum Posted May 7, 2009 Posted May 7, 2009 What do you think?? Two wheels and a motor...what's not to like?
Hermes Posted May 7, 2009 Posted May 7, 2009 Smoky, with 80cc, would you need a motorcycle licence and would you need insurance?
Quinn Posted May 7, 2009 Posted May 7, 2009 That has got to be a hoot to ride. Makes me wish I were ten years old again and had one. I'd be in so much trouble. How do you keep from burning your pant's leg?
rob1100r Posted May 7, 2009 Posted May 7, 2009 Smoky, with 80cc, would you need a motorcycle licence and would you need insurance? The officer that pulls you over would have a hard time proving the engine size: "Why, it is a 20cc weedwacker engine sir". I think Go-Ped engines are like 22cc and they are legal w/o insurance or license...but I could be wrong ***Oh, and that bike is COOL!
Smoky Posted May 7, 2009 Author Posted May 7, 2009 Here in BC if it under 49cc you don't need a licence, plate, or insurance. He's got these nice 49cc stickers for the engine cases. The motors come in several sizes, they are all officially 49cc! How about that? He doesn't have $400 into that bike.
JohnnyJ Posted May 7, 2009 Posted May 7, 2009 As gas prices go up, this could evolve into something big.
JohnnyJ Posted May 7, 2009 Posted May 7, 2009 He doesn't have $400 into that bike. Is this primarily from a kit, or does he purchase separate components.
Smoky Posted May 7, 2009 Author Posted May 7, 2009 The motor and all the other bits: gas tank, chain and sprockets, mounting hardware, throttle, clutch, exhaust, etc, all come in a box, he said about $160. The bike he finds on sale at a store, but this one he found on Craigslist. He liked the big back tire, and the chopper styling. In this case the bike was another $150. He made the exhaust pipe from electrical conduit! He puts the whole works together, rides it for a couple of monthes, get the itch for another style, sells this one and moves on to the next version.
