tcausey Posted May 7, 2009 Posted May 7, 2009 I've noticed that once my 02 1150RT is up to operating temp and I'm idling and a traffic light or something I can smell a little gas. When I stopped at work, I sniffed around and could smell it around the gas cap and if I stuck my nose in the gap between the tank and forks, I get a whiff too. Not real strong and no visible leaks. I'll probably take the bodywork off this weeknd to see if I can figure where it's coming from. I probably dripped a little when I filled it up, but I don't think that's what this is. Anything obvious I should check? Troy
knight88 Posted May 7, 2009 Posted May 7, 2009 QD behind right fairing, charcoal canister, maybe overfilled and expansion?
Yeeha! Stephen Posted May 7, 2009 Posted May 7, 2009 CK the fuel line quick connectors. They are plastic and the nipples crack easily. And the O-rings split just as easily...
tcausey Posted May 7, 2009 Author Posted May 7, 2009 Thanks. I'll check them this weekend. Are they easy to replace? I've read about the brass/ss ones. Anything special I need to remember if that's where the leak is and I'm going to replace them?
tcausey Posted May 7, 2009 Author Posted May 7, 2009 anyone have the stock partnumbers for the plastic ones and o rings? I think I can find the chrome/brass/ss numbers.
BFish Posted May 7, 2009 Posted May 7, 2009 try to get away from the plastic ones. bmw has alloy QD's now that i' ve heard good things about. when mine failed i went with an expensive set that are a PITA to reconnect. they work great and disconnect easily. due to old age i can't remember the manufacturer . very easy to install. just remembered...jiffey-tite.
BOXDAWG Posted May 7, 2009 Posted May 7, 2009 You may want to check the clamps that transition from rubber to solid fuel line. I had the same problem but not all the time. Finally saw it when I did TB/sync .
Bologna Posted May 8, 2009 Posted May 8, 2009 Troy, Just had it happen to me out on a short ride. Fuel started running out the right side and started steaming! The plastic quick connect had cracked and I was lucky it did not burst into flames! BMW has the metal fittings and is pretty easy to replace.
tcausey Posted May 9, 2009 Author Posted May 9, 2009 Thank you. I called Blue Moon Cycles here in Atlanta and asked if they stocked the QD's and the parts guy laughed and said, you mean the "upgraded ones"? He said, "I don't even have to look, I know we have them." If I smelled gas then he was almost certain that was it. He also suggested a different hose clamp where I wouldn't need the special crimper tool Took the right side bodywork off last night and sure enough, drip drip. I'll replace them today. Is there a best way to take off the old clamps? Thanks again for all the help
ElevenFifty Posted May 9, 2009 Posted May 9, 2009 You can pry them apart with a srewdriver ... I chose to just remove the four old fuel lines entirely ... I bought a length of new FI hose and 8 FI clamps from the local parts store. I removed the existing lines one at a time and installed a matched replacement. If I do it again, I'd buy an Oetiker tool and clamps so I wouldn't have to deal with getting the screw type clamps aligned correctly. My concern was that trying to get the barbed connectors out of the existing 4 year old tubing, MIGHT damage the hose and I'd have to do the job again.
