duketr4 Posted May 6, 2009 Posted May 6, 2009 I'm keen to seek input as to how many Km's one is likely to see from a RT 1150 gearbox that has been fastidiously maintained since new & ridden with above average TLC from a mature owner. My RT currently sports 130k (klm) on the clock & in the last week i have detected that it is becoming slightly more difficult to put it into gear from neutral & to a lesser extent going up through the gears. I must confess it is due for an oil change but likely not to be the issue. Given the gearbox has done a healthy amount of Km's my first thoughts are that maybe the selector forks are showing signs of wear thus having difficulty engaging the gear(s) properly or to a lesser extend there may be ware on the shift lever points going to the gearbox that have not yet been checked. Any feedback welcome from those who may have experienced the same problem. John
Boffin Posted May 6, 2009 Posted May 6, 2009 I would think more clutch than gearbox. Slight clutch drag will give those symptoms so I would pull the clutch slave from the rear of the box and check that out. It is tight but will come off without pulling the swingarm. Andy Edit: I almost forgot, another common problem leading to poor gear changing on RTs is the gear linkage. Either a loose pinch bolt on the inpust shaft or a build up of gunge in the linkeage rose joints. Definitely worth stripping, inspecting and cleaning these first. Andy
DonW Posted May 6, 2009 Posted May 6, 2009 Not sure if it applies to oilheads, but those are the classic signs of needing a clutch spline lube on an Airhead. Don
Yeeha! Stephen Posted May 7, 2009 Posted May 7, 2009 "Edit: I almost forgot, another common problem leading to poor gear changing on RTs is the gear linkage. I just had to tighten up a pinch bolt this weekend for the same reason...
