DrMikey Posted May 4, 2009 Posted May 4, 2009 When I purchased my R1150RT, it was equipped with a K&N air filter. Similar situation when I acquired an R1100R in 2003. Cleaned the pesky things, re-synched the injectors, and they still ran rough at low speeds compared to similar Beemers with stock setups. In both cases, replacing the K&N with an OEM air filter smoothed out the engine. With my RT, mileage improved by 3 to 4 mpg, too. Funny, but it seemed to me that once a person decides that a BMW fits what's important in his or her motorcycle, he'd be immune to the "quick fix/cheap horsepower" promised by makers of this kind of stuff. YMMV.
ArthurKnowles Posted May 4, 2009 Posted May 4, 2009 Well I'd say you are opening a can of worms here based on past experiance, but as a K&N or Blue filter user I use them not for their "performance gain", but simply because they are reusuable. I've never had a problem cleaning or oiling them. No muss. No fuss. And no motor damage either. Of course, as with all things YMMV.
philbytx Posted May 4, 2009 Posted May 4, 2009 Well, now you've done it and I've risen to the bait, as they say... In my particular situation : I keep my vehicles a long time and as I live in TX, using a K&N in our "dusty" climate does nothing to help the motor. K&N filters have been shown NOT to filter "down" to small enough microns to effectively remove silica etc. Others have posted tests demonstrating that, particularly in the case of our boxer motors, they do not improve h.p. or performance. My R1100R came with one and I removed it and went back to stock. Of course, YMMV but I just love worm cans
Jeepster Posted May 4, 2009 Posted May 4, 2009 Of course, YMMV but I just love worm cans LOL And also poking dead things with a stick evidently.
