Francois_Dumas Posted May 3, 2009 Posted May 3, 2009 I haven't had time yet to post anything much of Jacqueline and Richard's 'flash visit' in April. Gosh it is almost a month ago already !!! So lets skip all the introductory stuff and get right down to business. Nina was pretty excited (or that's my version of the story) and so this 'welcoming picture' didn't get done all too well... sorry.. it is one of the dangers of visiting the Dumas's ! After picking them up from Schiphol Airport (Amsterdam) we first dropped Nina off at Vivian's..... they were going shopping for the wedding. I then continued with the two tired travelers to see the wonders of North Holland....... like a 400 year old, fully functional windmill.... Jacqueline is trying to get the entire mill in the shot... or is she aiming at Richard?? I think Summer was on April 10th.. haven't had such a warm April mont since 1705.... how fitting! To the left of Richard is the outhouse..... On theleft a spare axe for the windmill, on the right the giant screw that pumps the ater 3 feet UP underneath each mill... Not easy cramming these big structures in such a small camera ! But he keeps trying ! Part of the inside of the living quarters of the mill. This is about 1/4 of the total surface available to the family..... two beds can be seen here. Outside again we explained Jacqueline how to carry the buckets with cow milk..... alright, there were wooden shoes in these...... .... can you spot the problem ???? After the mill visit we drove on to my home town, Hoorn. Alright... you may call it Horn. Richard was in dire need of his half-hourly cafeine shot !! (Notice the baby in the back being fed coffee with a spoon ???? we Dutch LOVE coffee). Jacqueline doesn't 'do' coffee, so that was easy..... One of the two main churches of the town, the protestant church..... now turned into shopping mall and living quarters in the roof. Nina by this time had arrived from amsterdam by train, including a totally new 'hair do' much to our surprise and joined us for a walk to the harbor.... still in 'shopping costume'... The 'Waag', the building that housed the city 'scales'. On it calibrated weights and city officials would make sure the market people were not cheating. It was also used to weigh women that were believed to be witches. Town square...... Part of the old port. Old warehouses in the back, admiralty buildings on the right. The old Harbor Tower, part of the former defense works of the town and harbor. We would have dinner inside the next evening! All of these buildings date back to early 1600..... Orange County Choppers Glasses....... .... Francois and Nina in it, too... The last part of 'main street' (on a Friday afternoon) with the Catholic Church on the right. On our drive through the country side we had seen no cows but lots of little lambs. While driving I hadn't had time to put them on a picture, so for Jacqueline..... these as an alternative
