Mike S Posted May 2, 2009 Posted May 2, 2009 I just got a new R1200RT (2009) a few months ago. Its my first BMW and I love it so far. However, the seat is a little uncomfortable in either high or low position. After reading a few posts, I realized that the bike might have been delivered to me with a low seat? Can anyone confirm whether this is a normal or low seat?? Thks!
Mike S Posted May 2, 2009 Author Posted May 2, 2009 Hmmm....now I need to find out how to exchange it for the regular one! Hopefully the dealer will agree to do so after 2 months. Thanks guys.
IanW Posted May 3, 2009 Posted May 3, 2009 Mike You may find someone to swap, try the classifieds. Ian
Nice n Easy Rider Posted May 3, 2009 Posted May 3, 2009 Mike, Check your invoice. If it didn't specify 'low seat' the dealer might be more inclined to swap it out for you.
Mike S Posted May 3, 2009 Author Posted May 3, 2009 It didn't say low seat...they probably swapped it out for another customer and forgot. Depending on how they handle this, they will remain 'my dealer' or not.
Lmar Posted May 3, 2009 Posted May 3, 2009 If the invoice doesn't say low seat it should be a simple fix?
cali_beemer Posted May 3, 2009 Posted May 3, 2009 I bought my 05 used witht he low seat option. I am 6-1 so lets just say I dont require the low seat. I was going to swap, but decide to send the pan back and get a Russell day long. The seat pans are the same between a low and a regular seat. I went on a trip with my low seat and my heacy 300+ lb frame compressed the foam so much I felt the edge of the seat pan in my leg. Uncomfortable doest really even begin to decripe that.
Casey Posted May 3, 2009 Posted May 3, 2009 I think that you've got a regular seat. The low seat is one piece and doesn't have the upper and lower setting like the regular one. At least, that's what the dealer in Louisville told me. Let us know what you find out... Casey

There is the regular height seat, low seat option and then there is the low seat/low frame option. The one pieces seat design is in the low seat/low frame option. The regular and low seat options are both a 2 piece. The OP does have the low seat (not the low seat/low fame version). I have the low seat as well and it sucks when your tall.

At least, that's what the dealer in Louisville told me. Let us know what you find out... Casey Actually there is a one piece low seat that comes with the lowered RT and a low driver's seat that is a no cost option available on the standard height RTs (this is the original low seat) that is used with the standard passenger section. The dealer should know that. I have the low driver's seat on my 07 RT and it's not a one piece seat.
TomfromMD Posted May 3, 2009 Posted May 3, 2009 Mike, it sure looks like the low seat with the standard (non-lowered) suspension. Is it uncomfortable because it is too low for you, or because it just starts to bite your nether regions after 100 miles or so? With my '06 RT, I ordered the low seat (5'10", 30" inseam) and after Rick Mayer worked his magic on the original pan, it is still low - but now is very comfortable. Point being that unless you want the higher seat height, trading for the OEM seat may not be the answer for you. Tom
Casey Posted May 3, 2009 Posted May 3, 2009 Wow! That's a lot of low seats!!! I apologize if I added to the confusion. Casey
Mike S Posted May 4, 2009 Author Posted May 4, 2009 Casey, I know the low seat option is still a two-piece seat. There is a factory low frame bike that has a one-piece seat, but it is different in other ways as well. Thanks.
Mike S Posted May 4, 2009 Author Posted May 4, 2009 Thanks for all of the help, guys. I just went out and bought the regular seat (turns out it was for sure the low one), so now I have both and can switch around...will put the one I don't use on here for sale!
SWB Posted May 5, 2009 Posted May 5, 2009 Thanks for all of the help, guys. I just went out and bought the regular seat (turns out it was for sure the low one), so now I have both and can switch around...will put the one I don't use on here for sale! Do me a favor? Post side-by-side pictures of the low versus standard seat. The bike I purchased came with both stock and a Sargent's seat, and of course, the Sargent's is a lot nicer. However, both of them look lower than your picture. I may in fact have a low factory seat plus the low after market Sargent's. The previous guy was shorter than me by about 6 inches. Guess it's probably why the bike's suspension rides like new. A 110 lb, 5' 4" rider doesn't put much stress on the ESA suspension. I'm making up for it BIG time, though (and if I showed ya my picture, you'd know why I emphasized "big" - 260 lbs dripping wet). - Scott
Mike S Posted May 5, 2009 Author Posted May 5, 2009 Scott, here you go. There is one pic of the regular non-low seat on my bike, and the low seat above it. The OP has a shot of the low seat on the bike by itself. I am 6'1" and close to your weight...the low seat was too restrictive. - Mike
stinger17 Posted May 5, 2009 Posted May 5, 2009 Don't know if it is a low seat or not but I can clarify one item mentioned: All RT's have 2 piece seats whether lowered version or not EXCEPT the FACTORY LOWERED RT's which have a one piece and are NOT AVAILABLE with a heated seat OR ESA.
