VinnyR11 Posted May 1, 2009 Posted May 1, 2009 Thanks to all who helped out on THIS THREAD Here's the update. I had a new Bosch HES installed at my mechanic's shop. $377 including installation. It looks like that indeed was the problem, even though the old one checked out OK on the bench. The bike runs as new. I am one happy camper, and thanks again. The above post and prior ones really helped me nail this quickly. BTW, isn't getting your non-running bike back healthy one of the great feelings. I pretty much never got off it yesterday.
VinnyR11 Posted May 1, 2009 Author Posted May 1, 2009 Did the new HES include new wires? The wires that were attached to the HES were also included in the new one.
philbytx Posted May 1, 2009 Posted May 1, 2009 Not a bad price really and did he put a new alt belt on while he was in there?
VinnyR11 Posted May 1, 2009 Author Posted May 1, 2009 Not a bad price really and did he put a new alt belt on while he was in there? I thought the price was pretty good as well. I had the alternator belt done last season, so that's OK. After years of zero problems I think I took care of the "big three" the past year, starter, alternator belt, and HES. Hopefully I'm in for years of another good run.
OoPEZoO Posted May 1, 2009 Posted May 1, 2009 I always considered the big three to be the final drive, transmission, and the engine Personally, I'm 2/3 on that battle
VinnyR11 Posted May 2, 2009 Author Posted May 2, 2009 I always considered the big three to be the final drive, transmission, and the engine Personally, I'm 2/3 on that battle My final drive issue was too many years ago, and I've spent most of those trying to forget. Thanks for the reminder! Amazingly it went within 50 feet of my driveway after a long ride, so if ever there was a major problem that had a bright side, that was it. IMO, 90% of the pain of bike problems is getting the bike back home or to a shop. Once it's there, at least you know eventually things will be OK. Engine and tranny have been bulletproof.
philbytx Posted May 2, 2009 Posted May 2, 2009 I'm with you, on the early bikes the HES and Starter are the two "killers"....BTDT with my R.
Matts_12GS Posted May 2, 2009 Posted May 2, 2009 I have done a starter and HES on my 96RT. It still rides and shifts better than 90% of the other BMWs I have ridden. It just works well for me. Heck, even that single throttle cable is easy to replace!
