Gearing up for summer. Been to the park but have never stayed there in a hotel, lodge etc. The web gives many choices....Any thoughts or experiences you can share that will help me find a place to hang for a few days this summer? Thanks,Dave

Yosemite Lodge is a motel style, Curry Village has cabins and canvas tents that you bring a sleeping bag to use. BUT if you haven't made reservations by now you may be shit outta luck. Both locations have restaurants or sandwich / pizza / taco places onsite.

Wawona hotel is at the southern entrance on Hwy.41 about an hour away from the valley. Remember the speed limit is 45 in the remote sections and less the closer to civilization. Rangers will ticket because bears get killed every year by speeders.

I'm not a fan of the valley in summer; it's too much of a zoo. Some years ago, we greatly enjoyed a stay at the Tuolumne Meadows Lodge. "Lodge" may be a misnomer, as there are 69 tent cabins, but they are comfortable, and the food at the lodge was excellent. Good luck on reservations at this date!

Dave, a friend of mine stays in Yosemite Valley frequently. He gets a backup plan together then just calls each day to check on cancellations in Yosemite Valley. As Tim mentioned the Hounds Tooth is a good choice from what I have been told. So is the Tanaya Lodge in Fish Camp. There is another motel on hwy 140 at El Portal that is closer to the valley. But if you really want to be in the valley keep calling you'll usually get lucky.

Note that road construction is going on in the valley and I hear it's a real mess. I won't be getting up that way for a few weeks so I can't speak from first hand knowledge.

Dave,

You'd better get your trip in early.

The falls may be nonexistent in late June. Bad drought year and early melt.

And they are working in the valley now. Mess at the eastern end near Curry village.
