KDeline Posted April 29, 2009 Posted April 29, 2009 I have what I would describe as very small shavings covering the drain magnet (I would post a picture but that is beyond me). Feels gritty between fingers, maybe like fine sand. Is that small amount normal I hope as this oil has about 19000 miles on it? What's the opinion of this group? A guy up here that works on BMW's as a retirement job says we should open the transmission.
smiller Posted April 29, 2009 Posted April 29, 2009 Really hard to say without a picture, but anything other than the usual sludge/fuzz is worth investigating. If there is concern I'd suggest sending an oil sample off to Blackstone... that usually tells the story one way or the other.
rocks Posted April 29, 2009 Posted April 29, 2009 Is that small amount normal I hope as this oil has about 19000 miles on it?/quote] 19,000 miles between oil changes
Joe Frickin' Friday Posted April 29, 2009 Posted April 29, 2009 Sludge that feels like paste between your fingertips is OK; sludge that feels like "fine sand" is not. This batch of oil has 19,000 miles on it. How many miles total on the gearbox?
KDeline Posted April 29, 2009 Author Posted April 29, 2009 Is that small amount normal I hope as this oil has about 19000 miles on it?/quote] 19,000 miles between oil changes I use Amsoil which they tote as a very high mileage oil and IMHO people change out WAY to soon, throwing away perfectly good oil, but again that is just MHO.
KDeline Posted April 29, 2009 Author Posted April 29, 2009 This batch of oil has 19,000 miles on it. How many miles total on the gearbox? Sadly it only has 19700 on it. I have seen these kind of filings in the old airheads I had and I got 160,000 miles on one and 130,000 on another with no break downs at all, but at the time I thought that was normal wear and tear, that is why I question opening this one up. BTW it is a little more then the sludge, but not metal chunks. In fact if I remember all my bikes had flakes for the first or second oil changes then became the sludge you mention.
Unhofliche_Gesundheit Posted April 29, 2009 Posted April 29, 2009 i think you answered your own question: "This batch of oil has 19,000 miles on it" + "(bike) has only has 19700 on it" + "all my bikes had flakes for the first or second oil changes " add it up and imho it looks premature to open the tranny. maybe fill and ride and check magnetic plug for residue again at next engine-oil change (6000mi). maybe use cheaper trans-oil as wont be in there for long. the guy who is recommending it be opened up might be looking for you to supplement his retirement income...

Unfortunately I can’t use them from Canada anymore.
Unhofliche_Gesundheit Posted April 29, 2009 Posted April 29, 2009 Dude - you are in Edmonton.... you likely have an oil analysis place within walking distance! (not saying you are gonna walk around Edmonton but rather you are beside the oil patch - gotta expect an extensive local 'large-machinery support infrastructure' lots of good reading at http://www.oilanalysis.com
