akjohn Posted April 28, 2009 Posted April 28, 2009 Greetings from Alaska...I picked up a pristine 06 GT with only 1700 miles on the odometer. The previous owner had several bikes and rode it very little. I only have an hour or so on the bike but it seems to run great. There are two months left on the warranty. I am thinking about buying an hour worth of labor and having the shop hook it up to the computer for any software updates and check for any faults before the warranty expires. I have been searching the forum for relevant threads. (The oil change thread with photos is great). I would appreciate advice regarding quirks or bugs, or recommendations with this first model year GT. thanks...jb
stubble! Posted April 29, 2009 Posted April 29, 2009 Congrats on the new bike. Nice low mileage, not much to do in the way of maintenance, but I'd change oil and brake fluid if they haven't been done. Can't argue with the fault check idea. I hadn't realized it, but a system check found one of my shocks had a problem and it was replaced under warranty. I'm sure there are lots of opinions on this, but I'd consider getting an extended warranty. My 06 K12S is on trans #3 and clutch #4, counting the ones it left the factory with. Once you've got a few more miles on her and are familiar & comfortable with the power, whale on it in second to see if it bucks out of gear at all. Again, congrats on the bike. That grin is hard to wipe off, I'm sure
Dennis Andress Posted April 29, 2009 Posted April 29, 2009 You might want to consider buying an extended warranty before the BMW one runs out.
akjohn Posted April 30, 2009 Author Posted April 30, 2009 Thanks for the responses...an extended warranty may be worth the money. Can anyone recommend a source for a good extended warranty?
BeniciaRT_GT Posted April 30, 2009 Posted April 30, 2009 Thanks for the responses...an extended warranty may be worth the money. Can anyone recommend a source for a good extended warranty? I've heard some negative things about several lately... I have heard pretty good things about These guys (PRCO) I'm not the one to ask about reliability on these bikes, but they are awesome when they run! I highly recommend buying the the "exclusionary" coverage extended warranty. (Top of the line version) Enjoy your new toy!
JR356 Posted May 3, 2009 Posted May 3, 2009 Get the final drive fluid changed, newest recommendations call for a change at the 600mi initial service. This may not have been in effect when your new ride had it's 600mi. break in service. There were some problems with high idle when bike was warm on that generation K bike, some bikes required air box replacement and a few other fixes. Even if you have to spend a grand or so on a 3 or 4 yr. extended warranty,it is likely worth it.if the final drive or gearbox goes, that expense will easily be recouped! www.k-bikes.com is a good resource.there are specific message forums for each generation of K,as well as a wealth of other tidbits. pbbeck Posted May 4, 2009 Posted May 4, 2009 JR beat me to it. Be sure to find out if the air box was replaced on your bike.
akjohn Posted May 4, 2009 Author Posted May 4, 2009 I will change the final drive oil...it is cheap insurance. On the receipt for 600 mile service there was a note to check throttle. I will see what that was about. For the time being the bike runs great. Although its heavy the bike is really light on its feet. It was easy to settled into. An there's always the big whooooosh :-)
chrisolson Posted May 6, 2009 Posted May 6, 2009 I have an '06 also, and as far as software upgrades, air box etc. my advice is "if it ain't broke, don't try and fix it!" Once you do an upgrade, there is no going back. And the upgrades are no guarantee that the bike will do anything better if its working fine now. And in some cases, the raw acceleration at about 7K is softened. However, with so few miles on the bike its hard to assess if any of the known GT issues are or will be evident on yours ... not all bikes exibit the issues you read about on the net.
akjohn Posted May 11, 2009 Author Posted May 11, 2009 Thanks for all responses. I was able to get out for a couple hundred miles yesterday. The bike ran great. The throttle is smooth. Given it size I am impressed with how nimble it is. Of course...plenty of power. This is a nice bike. This week I am having the final drive oil changed and a check for faults. I am confident the shop will say the bike is like new. I agree with the "if it ain't broke..." approach. The bike runs great. I'm just going to ride it. :-)
