swfraley Posted April 23, 2009 Posted April 23, 2009 I've lived in Indianapolis for over 5 years and I've only been to the 500 once. It looks like I may get to go this year, so I went to the IMS's unbelievably confusing website to get tickets. My question to you Indy veterans: Where can you go with General Admission tickets? If it's just the infield, I'm not interested. A related question is: Where do you think the best Reserved seats are?
UberXY Posted April 24, 2009 Posted April 24, 2009 Stu: I sat in turn 2 in 1994, the year Mercedes won with a pushrod engine. It wasn't too bad - we couldn't see the pits, but it was the first year pit out was on the back straight, and I had a good view of that. But the track is huge. If you are at one end of the track, the other end is almost 3/4 mile away. From two we could not see four and could not see pit in. You can't see as much as you can at the more modern speedways. To be honest, when the race was over, we went to a sports bar downtown with big screen TVs and watched the delayed "live" coverage and saw a lot more of the action, plus we didn't have to hike for beer. As for tickets, I don't know, I got comped for the weekend by an oil company. But I was very impressed with how Indianapolis deals with the traffic. There was a huge bus staging area downtown. A caravan of busses would form up and then get a police escort to the track in a dedicated bus lane. We parked at the old Speedway Motel - hassle free, very well organized.
LandonBlueRT Posted April 24, 2009 Posted April 24, 2009 I attended the 500 many times during the sixties, seventies, and eighties, but have not attended since. Back in those days general admission got you into the infield. I have sat in the grandstand at the starting/finish line and several other locations and my favorite spot was some place between turn 2, and 3. Now the best way for me to see the 500 is on TV.
