Question on winter storage battery removal

Hi All,

New guy on the block Howdy  got a question hope somebody can help with

Just wondering if removing the battery from my 08 RT for the winter was a bad idea. I live in Canada and I don't want to freeze the battery so I parked the bike took out the battery stored it inside and covered up the bike in the garage (not heated).

After reading the boards a bit I sense that a lot of people keep a trickle charger on them all winter. Any chance I will scramble the computer when I hook it back up after a few months without a battery in it?

Thanks for any advice.

Todd

It's specifically recommend by BMW for winter storage. See page 136 of your manual. You should put it on a battery tender, or otherwise charge it periodically.

Removing the battery during a long cold winter is a good idea. There is no chance of "scrambling" the computer when you reinstall it. After doing so, you should turn the key on (engine off) and rotate the throttle to full "on" then "off" once or twice. You're then all set to fire it up and ride.

My RT lives in an unheated garage over the winter too. Last winter I removed the battery & brought it in the house, trickle charging it about every four/five weeks for up to twelve hours at a time. My charger does not have a self shut off so I confirm voltage is approx 14V using a digital multi meter. I should point out I take voltage readings while charging and stop when it reaches approx 14V. My bike fired right up last spring and no 'scrambling'; am doing the same this winter. On pg 133 of my manual, it states if the battery is disconnected to use a suitable charger; I take that to mean my trickle charger is suitable. If we lived in warmer climes, I would leave it in the bike & buy one of the fancy chargers discussed on this forum.

That's right. If you don't follow this procedure, then as you ride the computer will still eventually learn the full range of throttle positions, but this step eliminates that "learning curve".
