I am still trying to correct a problem with the red warning light coming on, long story...

Now I've got an oil leak. It seems to be coming from the banjo on the lower end of the big oil pipe on the left hand side of the bike. I have just replaced to two washers and tried as best I could to ensure all surfaces were clean, but it still leaks!!!!

Any ideas?

This pipe is the oil-cooler return line, the two alluminum (or sometimes copper) sealing washers should do the trick if all is clean and level. What I found on my bike recently however, was considerable corrosion where the pipe is strapped to the engine front casing. As this pipe is powder coated, a small crack can allow corrosion to spread down under the coating, effectively lifting it free. This means that any small leak from part-way down the pipe from corrosion would be conducted down to the banjo, giving the appearance that the leak is coming from there.

Thanks Boffin,

I've just been outside and taken the side-panel off to get a better look.

I removed the banjo and cleaned it up, like you said the black power coat just flaked off leaving a rusty surface. I cleaned and cleaned again then put it all back with some blue Hylema sealer.

I ran it for about 15min and couldn't see a leak like I did last time, although I am not convinced I have fully sealed it. Guess I'll have to wait till I get to work tomorrow and see how much oil is left :-)

I'm really surprized that you already have a rusty pipe. There is quit a bit of testing on the pipes from any supplier before they are approved to be used. I work for BMW (autos) and corrosive that is done is pretty extensive. The normal wear is quite better then 8 years. I'm glad to see that you got the leak stopped hopefully. If it still leaks you may want to check the sealing surface on the banjo blt and the cooler. Small scratches has caused similar leaks from what I've seen. Good Luck

Man, My sympathies for you chaps in the UK. Seems everything you have there succumbs to the ambient environment via corrosion. :P

For a short time I had a 1962 Austin Mini that was imported into the states (specifically CA) in 62! Rust free!(I regret the sale) Although I'm sure in that short period of time from build date to boat the English elements were trying to get to it!

I had one of those for a few years....all I was left with was the drivers door handle! ;)
