cali_beemer
So, I decided to ge tone of the UB 12220 batteries for my RT. Unoftunately the harware is a bit too big in OD for the mounting lugs. For those that have used this battery, did you drill out the hole? if so what tool did you use? or did you use new hardware? I have some smaller hardware but I was thinking that you probably dont want much play in the hole. I just wanted to check here before doing anything to the lug and if there are any special precautiosn since afterall this is a fully charged battery. Also, any recomendations for shim material? T__
C.B., I usually just use a metric step drill (uni-bit) Just use a pair of Vise Grips to hold the lugs.. The step drill doesn’t snag & twist/distort the part & it sort of reams as it drills (leaves a very professional looking hole).. Twisty Link to comment

I would normally go buy one but since i lost my job, I am just happy to get approval to buy a new battery. I was thinking of filing it since it seems like a really small difference. Link to comment
T__
cali_beemer, sorry about you losing your job.. I guess that means you have more time than money so in that case a file should work just fine.. Twisty Link to comment

cali_beemer
Okay, filing is done and the battery is installed. I used cardboard as a ship since I had nothing else to use. One quick question. I installed the battery and the bike starts and runs fine. I let it run for a few seconds and then turned the motor off. It seemed like I heard a brief second or two of a metal sliding on metal. Not a grinding noise. Is this the starter? Is it a sign that the starter is on its way out. When I had my issue witht he battery, I stopped the bike at my destination and tried to start it. It wouldnt start and seemed like the battery just didnt have the juice to turn it over. It then started to turn but then stopped and I heard a spinning noise. Please tell me my starter is not on its way out. Link to comment
Scarver
cali_beemer, sorry about you losing your job. Just installed same battery on my 05 RT. Drilled post holes out with 6 mm drill bit - could have filed them out as you did. Traced outline of bottom of battery on piece of scrap 5/16 inch plywood and cut it out as spacer. Assembled without a problem. The noise you heard was most likely the starter motor spinning after failing to engage and turn the flywheel due to condition of old battery. My 05 F650CS did the same thing this week so will also be replacing its battery. These sounds are "normal" and should not reoccur with a freshly charged battery! Link to comment
Dick_at_Lake_Tahoe_NV
Slight HiJack, but since the basic problem has been solved with a file--here goes. This is a very handy drill set to have in your arsenal. And only 8-bucks. http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=91616 Link to comment

Okay, thats sounds good that the sound upon trying to start was just from the weak battery. Can anyone confirm the sound I am hearing now. I have installed the new battery, and the bike starts just fine. The bike runs and idels perfectly fine. When I shut the motor off I hear what sounds like metal sliding over metal for about 2 seconds. It doesnt sound like a grinding noise. I have never noticed it beore but I was never listening to it eaither. I also run earbuds so I never hear the engine turn off. Can anyone confirm if the sound I am heairng is normal? It does not sound like it is coming from in the motor. Link to comment

Barring a problem with a brake pump not shutting directly down,, or possibly someone installed an oil cooler fan,, or some type of aftermarket accessory being the problem my first GUESS would be the alternator is making that noise.. I believe the alternator in your bike has an over-running clutch so I suppose it’s possible that is making a noise as the alternator spools down after you shut the engine off.. I haven’t ever heard one on a BMW make that type of noise but have heard auto’s make a short noise after engine shut down.. I guess it still could be your starter but that would mean it was probably running & not engaging the flywheel (be very unusual).. Otherwise possibly a can-bus controlled module doing something strange.. You really need to do a little close listening to give us an area on the bike that the noise is coming from.. eman6880
When you guys mounted the UB 12220 did you have to bend or modify the metal bracket that holds the battery in place or did it line up properly? Thanks for any info. Link to comment
Scarver
No, I didn't have to modify the bracket. Link to comment
eman6880
Thanks Scarver. I picked up a different battery at my local battery's Plus and it seems to be shaped differently and would require some serious reshaping of the metal strap to hold snugly, not to mention it was almost double the UB. I think I will return and order the UB just hate to miss out on these nice 50 degree riding days while I have a week off from work waiting on the UPS man. Link to comment
