Is this RT's clutch really going out ?

A buddy has been having apparent clutch slipping problems for a while but it seems odd it would have held up as long and well as it has if the clutch is really going out ? What do y'all think based on his description below ?

It definitely slips, in 5th gear, 60 mph ++, when I snap to WOT, the revs go up but the speed doesn't match at the appropriate time interval. Now then, this doesn't happen every time, probably 7 out of 10 occasions it does occur. It's been doing this for the last 15 months. Okay, that's not entirely true. It started and then I adjusted the cable and the problem cured itself for 8 months or so. So then it started slipping again and I tried with limited success to adjust the cable myself. Then a friend helped me to adjust the cable via the new-&-improved quickie method on the evening of a tech daze and I tried the slip as I was leaving his house and sure enough, it slipped. It slips only when I ride hard, which is often for me anyway. I've been careful to not "hoon" with frequency to minimize the problem and extend the clutch. The bike has 83,000 miles on it which puts in right in the middle of clutch replacement periods as far as I can research.

The only other thing I might try, though I don't the success here, would be to replace the cable with a new one. There is no replacement data that I know of, save for having a spare if it breaks. And at my mileage, any stretching that would occur has happened already.

So now that you know the whole story, what do you think?

Based on the slipping in 5th, it shounds like your clutch is near its wear limit. Might be time to do the spline lube/clutch replacement thing. It's not so bad...definately doable by a home mechanic with a few tools and just a bit of mechanical ability. Do a search here on spline lube and/or clutch replacement and you should find a wealth of info.

Good luck,

At 83K it might need a clutch.

Could also be that the Input shaft seal is leaking. Look at the rear of the transmission where the clutch lever is attached to the trans. There is a rubber dust boot. If there is oil dripping onto the swingarm or the boot is oily, you may have a failed rear input shaft seal.

Transmission needs to be opened to correct, which is a bit more of a setback than a new clutch. Good luck!

Nope, not oily! Yes, it's my bike. I'll start compiling the online resources, DIY articles for a clutch replacement. frown.gif

A great one is the spline lube DVD that was listed somewhere on the board. Not only covers that but clutch replacement as well.

I own that one and have watched it a few times. I'll be watching it again before I tackle this job.
