johnlt
I took a short ride to Mount Hopkins about 40 miles south of Tucson. There is a dirt road that goes to the top where the Smithsonian's Whipple Observatory is located. You can't get past the 7K foot level because of a gate unless you are on a tour. There are a couple paved areas including the gate area but mostly it is narrow good dirt road. Road up: The observatory from the 7K foot gate area Mount Wrightson from the gate area (9.4K feet) Looking south into Mexico from the gate area: Link to comment
