help with my RTP's new "condition"

Starfighter

Recommended Posts

My RTP developed a new “condition” today.

I was riding along about 65-70 mph when everything just stopped for a second, the abs lights flashed a few times and then everything back to normal.

I turned around and headed home.

It happened a few more times on the way home. lose of power, abs lights flash (and battery light once) then all normal…..

I plugged the charger in when I got home and it started flashing green right away so battery is up.

I’m guessing it’s a momentary short somewhere but……where do you start looking for a thing like this ?

Check your ignition wiring. Check the wiring right below the switch, and then follow the wiring down to the first zip tie and check there. Those would be the first places I would look.

Start the bike, and try wiggling the wires to see if you can re-produce the problem at home.

Allan, could be a momentary short or just as easily a momentary open.. Check ALL battery cables & wire connections for being tight & corrosion free..

Might also look at your wire harness where it runs along the side of the steering neck (about at the first tie strap),, BMW has had some issues with broken wires in that area..

This might be a long shot, but the switch on the kickstand can interrupt the ignition. I have never looked at mine to see if it is adjustable. If it is, it might have backed out to the point of engaging with a minor movement of the kickstand like a bump in the road. I think my switch triggers when the stand is almost all the way extended. You could start the bike and lower the stand to see when it shuts the bike off.

john844 It's a rt/p that idles with the sidestand down. All things mentioned before make sense. But don't hold your breath here. With all the left over wiring on those bikes.I have a 98 rt/p with some wires hot in some bun dells. They just cut them with side cutters. What a mess.

Yep, Karl's right...

Checking the sidestand is going to be a challenge.........

But, right now it's my most suspect....

Since all else goes through fuses,(and I didn't blow a fuse) I'm thinking sidestand, battery connections or ignition switch are top contenders.......

Well, sidestand seems good.

I had the bike running and in 1st gear, clutch in...

jiggled the sidestand, then moved it around....

Does not kill the engine until almost all the way extended...

Looks like time for a tupperware party !!!

You only blow fuses with shorts - the most probable culprit based on many cases reported here is a broken wire in the ignition switch harness under the first zip-tie. These are too tight from the factory and the harness is flexed back and forth here by bar movements. Eventually the wires break causing the current to stop flowing, not to short and cause an increase in current flow.

Hmmmmmmm......

well, I was able to get another 1/4" of turn on the battery connections and to the selenoid..............

I did alot of jiggling at the ignition switch, and turning of handle bars ...but will take the nose cone off and check further...........

Well Twisty was right, it was an open...

Andy was right, it was the ignition wires...

cut the tie wrap and jiggled and killed the engine...

thank you gentlemen and please feel free to stop by whenever for a beer..........

NOW......to figure out which wire in the bundle and repair/replace..

YEEEE_HAAAA!!!!!!

This morning (after coffee)I found the exact problem area....

Red wire from the ignition was broken clean in half and only held in place by the outer sleeve....

Amazing that I rode the 100 miles home that way..........

I spliced in and soldered some longer wire and there is joy in Mudville !!!Thanx to all who responded with help and especially Twisty and Andy who nailed down the solution for me..

See you out there.
