Bruch
I plan to make a mount for my satellite radio using the unused mirror mounting holes on the left grip. Does anyone know the thread size of the mirror stem that is used on other mirrored models? The parts blow up shows a 'special nut' used to attach the mirror. Anyone maybe have details on that nut? Basically I have a ball type camera mount lying around and I think I should be able to just cut some threads on the end of the shaft and away i go. Thanks Bruch Link to comment
Ken H.
It’s not threaded at all. Rather the mirror stem end has a compression sleeve on it. The RAM Mount people (and others?) make a adaptor for the hole for use in attaching various things there. Link to comment
bootzilla
Yup. RAM makes an adaptor that has a hole on one side, a 1" ball on the other end. Attach an arm and bracket - works great. On mine, I used a 1/4" bolt, 2 1/2" long, with a washer on either side and a nut on the bottom - a little Blue loctite on the bottom to make sure it doesn't vibrate free, and you're good to go. Thanks Bruch Bruch, I have an old GS mirror that I put on rental or borrowed BMW RT’s when I fly & ride so I can see over my camping gear.. That mirror fits all the late BMW RT’s that I have used it on.. The mirror shank is 8mm with 8x1.25 threads on it.. That special ($8.00+) nut used on the BMW mirrors is basically a barrel nut with an allen socket on the bottom so you can get a wrench on it to tighten it.. That special nut is needed as the lower nut hole on the R bikes is recessed so you can’t use or tighten a standard 8x1.25 conventional nut.. I have those high dollar nuts on the KGT mirrors that stay on my R1200RT but on the extra mirror I carry with me,, all I use on that is a homemade nut made from a metal valve stem retainer nut.. Those are usually brass or chrome plated brass so don’t gall, stick or rust.. The one I used I picked up from my local tire shop from their junk drawer.. I had to chase the threads to be the 8x1.25 I needed as I believe the original thread were 5/16” fine thread.. If you are using a 5/16 bolt or 8 mm bolt to make your mount from you can modify to what you need.. The valve stem nut is barrel shaped with a hex that sticks out the bottom just enough to get a wrench on.. The other alternative is to allow your mount bolt to stick through the bottom far enough to allow a sleeve to be used (probably ½” to ¾” long) then use a conventional nut on the bottom of the sleeve (that should give good wrench access).. As the others have mentioned you could use a ¼” bolt & nut as I believe you could get a 7/16” deep socket into that hole to tighten but that would be a ¼” bolt in an 8mm (5/16”) hole.. Bruch
Thanks Twisty, that picture tells all. I did expect some sort of shoulder on the shank above the threads, though. I guess that means the hole in the control is threaded, eh? I'm in a 'spend no money' mode right now, since I have time, and access to all kinds of metric hardware, TIG welder, mill, etc. at work. The plant is closing in a couple months, so I'm watching the pennies. Another reason I'm very happy I bought a used RT, instead of financing a new one. So I've got 2 months to build every kind of bracket and mount I might need! Go Steelers! Bruch Link to comment

There is a shoulder on the mirror stem that settles into the bottom of the pocket in the control.. If you use a bolt for your project it will need a shoulder or upper sleeve to nest down in the pocket.. Twisty Link to comment
RiceToy
I've searched RAM Mounts catalog and can only find the oil reservior cover plate mount. Could you provide a link to the RAM stalk that fits the hole in the controls? Link to comment
RiceToy
The bore in the control is too small and deep to see the profile of the top of the recessed hole. Does the shoulder on the mirror stem of the GT mirrors (that fit there) have any sort of machined treatment like taper to better engage the recessed hole from the top side? It seems like there should be some form of compression sleeve, knurling, or other feature to prevent the mirrors from swiveling in the wind. If they do, is there any way to get the dimensions or a picture of the stalk, where it engages the control hole? Link to comment
T__
There is just a metal plate down in the control with an 8mm hole in it.. No threads or taper involved.. The mirror stem is just pinched to that metal plate on the top with a step in the mirror stem & pinched against that metal plate on the bottom by the nut & washer.. The mirror stem measured 12mm above the step,, 8mm through the hole.. KS mirror picture_clickey this linkey Twisty Link to comment
RiceToy
Thanks for the pic Twisty, that is very helpful! Now, what to do with those free mounting holes... GPS on one and radar detector on the other? or One of my riding buddies has six... yes 6 large cup holders on his Goldwing - yah, maybe cupholders! Link to comment
Bruch
Aaargh, its not a Goldwing! Link to comment
Bruch
These panavise camera mounts have a 12.7mm shaft. http://www.panavise.com/index.html?pageID=1&page=full&--eqskudatarq=81 Some minor grinding and it fits right down into the hole in the switch cover. It comes with a 1/4-20 button head allen. I'm making a backmount for my satellite radio Monday to attach to the Panavise arm. Bruch Link to comment
