seat dliemna

2005 R1150RT. I bought the bike when it was one month old and had 1100 miles. It came with a Cee Bailey seat and the stock seat which is still new. Big surprise, the Cee Bailey seat still does the uncomfortable slide forward. I have been using a gel pad at the front of the seat to fill in and make it work.

The dilemna. I am planning a month long 5000 mile trip in the US in April with friends. I have to do something other than tote that gel pad around. Is is possible to have someone re-carve the foam in the Cee Bailey so it rides level. Would it need a new cover? It would need considerably more foam up front and perhaps less in the rear....or should I just opt for a Russell Day Long.

2nd Question..Back rest. Yes or no.. If yes...Who's. I have an older air head I had a Corbin seat made with me on it with a backrest, but never found it all that useful.

Thoughts and recommendations appreciated.

I would contact Cee Bailey about the seat.. Perhaps they could modify it for you. With regard to the backrest, I think you answered your own question..

I had a custom Cee Bailey's seat on my '04 RT and thought it was great (comfortable and no slide-forward)! They have lots of experience with RT seats and probably could take care of the problem for you, although I don't see how you could avoid the round-trip shipping expense. It wouldn't hurt to give them a call.

Regarding the back rest, I tried one briefly on the R1200RT but didn't think it was very helpful (due to my slightly leaned forward riding position).

Have you tried the Seat Jacks that raise the front of the seat anywhere from 1/4 to 1/2 inch, this helped significantly on my 03?

Ditto. I made 1/4" thick seat jacks and that helped alot on my Rick Mayer seat.

+1 on jacking up the front of the seat. I made my own using hardwood wedges and it worked great on my 1150RT. Didn't need them on my 1200

This is going to be hard to write so that you can understand but I will give it a shot.

I raised the front of my seat by doing two things. One was to put a wooden dowel... about 1/4" diameter in the slot that holds the front positioning bar... or what ever you call it. This prevents the front carrier from going all the way down thus raising the front of the seat. The rear bump stops still position in the lower position.

The second thing is to remove the rubber bump stops from the rear of the riders seat. This lowers the rear of the seat by about 1/4".

These two moves together provide a nice correction to the low front/slide forward problem. The good thing about this approach is that both "corrections" are installed/removed in about 30 seconds and the dowel can be stored in the glove box if you want a different feel for a few miles--- same for the bump stops.
