Seasonality Here in the Northeast

I set a winter riding criteira a few years ago (especially during the NFL Season) If the sun isn't going to be out and the high temp isn't predicted to reach 40 degrees, I'll find something else to do. That doesn't mean I won't ride the HD for 20 miles to simply "run it", but marathons, (4-6 hours) thanks.. but I'll pass. A significant change given what we did do a few years ago (Gerbings equiped at 24-30 degrees)

My pals (real men) are constantly breaking my stones. Am I the only whimp that enjoys other things and cold, gray afternoons?

yeah, i took up the saxohpone so i use that to keep me off the bike on the weekends. Now i'm finding its keeping me off the bike in the warm weather as well! LOL go figure

The first thirty minutes are not the same as the next hour. And the second hour is not the same as the first. A little short term discomfort is okay, but all day misery is just not fun. Why take the joy out of an optional activity? There's not much sense burning gas and wasting rubber just to be miserable.

If cabin fever strikes, I can see suiting up like Ralphie's little brother from A Christmas Story and going for a half hour ride. If my parts aren't too numb, they can vote to go for extending the ride time.

haha! talk about a sabotage thread.

i haven't really measured it yet but i'd estimate a month out of them? I haven't learned how to cut them just yet, but my teacher showed me how to do this so i have to get a piece of glass and some 200 or 400 grit sandpaper to get better yields out of the box of 10 i buy.

i have a yamaha 82Z alto and my teacher lent me his vintage king tenor (i think its a 1940's model, silver plated...very old but sounds very nice)

You know the conditions, salt, sand, occasional black ice (up north)all the plugs and wires to manage and its COLD...

That about sums it up! Ride On Santa! Ah, Gerbings in Red!

Yup. We have all them conditions out there today and add a little snow also.

Riding plans for today have changed. :(

We are pretty fortunate here in VA. I can get a fair amount of winter riding in, albeit when it is cold, about as far as I get is to the diner. Gotta keep the carbs high in cold weather !!

I would have taken the RT out at least half a dozen times since the snow started here...if I could get up my long upslope ice covered 'farm lane' type driveway :-(.

I have thought about paving it just to keep the gravel thrown by the snow blower out of the lawn parts, and the black asphalt would certainly help melt the ice, but the cost is prohibitive. So I live with the lawn tractor finding bits of gravel the first few times and waiting patiently to get up and out the driveway for my 'first ride' in the spring.

Sure is frustrating on those lovely winter days when the temps are moderate and the roads bare...

Quinn's logic is precisely what I was trying to articulate. First I convince myself it's a good idea, an hour into it I have doubts then it's to early to "break off" from the crowd. Solo rides with options make more sense. Settled, I'll get the King out this week (when it hits 45 degrees)run it, fill the tank and wait for another another 40+ sunny day

I have riding criteria similar to yours, the guys that call me a wimp for not riding are guys that ride thousands of miles per year less than I do. They seem to make it safely from home to work (15 minutes) or from home to the bar (shortest route possible). I just ask them what they think I have to prove to them. If the guy or gal is a traveler and logs a lot of miles per year I happily admit that I'm a wimp and try to get them to tell me about one of their adventures, they won't hold being a wimp against you.

Was this supposed to be posted over at E-Harmony?
