Going to California I think

Hey all,

With any real luck, I am going to take vacation starting on Dec 17th through the 5th of January this year. Last year I set of for Yosimite, diverted towards Torrey, and ended up in Moab. All because weather and Palin. This year, I am thinking about heading out on the 17th and again trying to get around CA and maybe even up to see the Bay area folks. Most likely this will be in the Jeep and not the bike since weather is often an issue.

Not sure if anyone has time for dinner but would love to see some of you hoons before the Holiday.

Let me know if you are interested in hooking up.

The car would be a good option especially if you are planning a trip to the Sierra's which would include Sequoia and Yosemite. Not sure but I believe most of the passes are closed. For info on road closures call 800-427-7623. Let us know when you will be in SoCal. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!!

Thanks all!

If the weather holds, I am so there and will do a LA drive by on the weekend coming home (Dec 20th). This will be a hoot!

Since you showed such good judgment on my other thread, and left it alone:

I will volunteer us as either a stopping point, or even a home base for your meanderings. I will even offer up a party (possibly, depending on timing) at the infamous BeniciaRT-Jacqueline bar. I haven't talked to the boss on this one, but we can figure out a schedule I'm sure! We do have some guests planned for Christmas week...

YES!!!! I keep telling Richard we need to have over a bunch of BMWST people, just to have them over...(and we've been meeting so many new BMWST we'd love to give them a chance to meet others here)... Tom our house is open to you (and everyone for that matter) to come and stay as long as you like...even if you only want to use it like a hotel (go off and do your own thing). It would be a great opportunity to get as many together as possible... and with you around it's always a party .

And for Richard saying he hasn't talked to the boss on this one... he must be referring to his boss at United... he knows he doesn't have to run anything like this by me!!!!

Tom,

If your wanderings bring you on my side of the Sierras, you know you've got a room here for you! I would like to hook up with you someway.

If the "party" comes together at Benicia (or elswhere) I would most likely be IN if occurring on a weekend.

I'm late to the party again but our home is open and we'd love to have you stay with us at any point during your visit including Christmas. We'll be having a standing rib roast and some excellent wine to wash it down.

Maybe we could gin up a ride with Traveler 1's extra bike and all the North Bay riders who are available. Just a thought. Keep us in the loop.

Tom,

You know that that door is open if you happen by this way.....we have an extra room in West Covina which is kinda in the "middle" of LA. If your going to be further north or south or east or west we can still try and get together for a margarita!! Let me know......

This is what NOAA IS saying about Yosemite and Central California....

... Increased winds on Saturday then turning much colder on Sunday...

A strong cold front will cross central California on Saturday.

As a result... winds will increase across the area. With sustained

winds of 25 to 40 mph with gusts as high as 60 mph over the Kern

County mountains and deserts. In addition sustained winds of 15 to

25 mph with gusts up to 45 mph will be possible across the west

side of the San Joaquin Valley including along the I-5 corridor.

The winds will subside on Saturday night as a cold and unsettled

airmass pushes into the area.

Significant precipitation will be possible from Sunday through the

middle of next week with temperatures running well below

normal... especially across the higher elevations. As a

result... the snow level will lower to 1500 to 2500 feet which will

impact travel across I-5 over the Grapevine as well as along the

coastal passes on Sunday.

For further updates... stay tuned to NOAA Weather Radio or your

favorite media source. Additional information can also be found

on the National Weather Service webpage... weather.Gov/Hanford.

Maybe I need some time on the SEA. Will advise more by Sunday

The snow that falls below about 5000 feet won't stick for more than a day.

Yosemite is most beautiful dressed in fresh snow.

Your Jeep is 4x4.

Link to comment

Tom does make a good point that Yosemite would be a sight to see all decked out in a winter wonderland scheme.

If you do plan to travel in the mountains it would be a good idea to pick up a set of (tire) chains even with 4x4.

If you stay along the coast (1 &/or 101) snow should not be an issue.

Link to comment

I will make the final call on routes on Sunday but I told Whip last night I was going to get some chains for the jeep. Need to get a few other things as well to make it more winterized. This will be a good trip!

.... our cold front is from Alaska....

And it's a wet one too.

It was a little damp here in sunny Socal today but I got a bike wash out of it

Slight chance of rain the next two days then Cool, Crisp & (mostly) Clear the rest of the week.

So I guess the silence means your not coming?

Link to comment

No the silence means I am up to my ears in work here and haven't come up with the final timeline for the trip. I am having to present some data tomorrow and after that I will see what the next issue is or if I am free to head out to CA.

Link to comment

Well I tried. Took today off and worked 5 hours anyway. I have a few things I have to do tomorrow. There is a small chance I will pack the jeep up and make a photo run up and back to Yosemite, but I won't be headed to LA or SFO this year...again. Maybe next year

Sorry you won't be making it out this time Tommy, but the weather would definitely be a challenge and maybe downright dangerous. We'll all be here next time you get a change to make the great escape. Till then, take care and have a Merry Christmas!
