Noob needs help. What is the difference in these cases?

This bike has "System" cases:

This bike has "City" cases:

The city cases are color-matched... but are they different sizes or what??? Are some more highly desired? :dopeslap:

City cases are the same as standard system cases except that the lid is shallower. This gives the bike a narrower profile but of course also reduces the case carrying capacity. Some like the city cases in areas where it is legal to split traffic (filter) but otherwise the standard cases are preferable for their much greater capacity.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure the "cases" are the same -- it's the lids that are different depths. I think there are actually 3 sizes from BMW - city, standard and touring. Skinny, medium and wide.

I also believe they are interchangeable -- you can swap them around.

Yes, they can be changed but the originals are rivited in. BMW sell a rivet kit for the changeover but it is best to drill out the rivets and replace them with suitably sized bolts and locknuts.

BMW also has touring case lids which are twice as wide as the standard lids. The mirrors are the widest point on the bike with the standard lids, touring lids are about as wide as a Buick.

FWIW, I once got city lids to make it easier to lane-split here in CA. I would have been much better off getting a bigger top case, which holds more than both city cases combined, and just leaving the side cases off the bike. That's what I do now.
