waylap
I've got my alternator cover un-bolted to check underneath and finsih some maintainance and can't remember how to get it completely off. It's blocked at the bottom by the headers and midway by the paralever. Please tell me I don't have to remove the headers!! Also , once removed I see people cut in half for easier removal later. This doesn't cause a problem of gook getting in there while riding in inclement weather? Link to comment
philbytx
You will need to remove the LH 'Shark fin', to slide it out..... Link to comment
waylap
Aha!.... just did that and it worked like a charm. Wrenching while computing makes computer dirty. Link to comment
Unhofliche_Gesundheit
"Wrenching while computing makes computer dirty" ..... and careful you dont get any pixels on your bike (under the alternator cover for example) going the other way! Vorsicht Bitte! i heard about the 'cutting in half' thing - read about it when i looking for answers here while fighting to get my cover off to inspect the belt. i remember thinking i wished the previous ownder had done so (cut it in half) then i would not be fighting with it at that exact moment. then i took off the shark fin -which was pretty easy -and the belt cover was then easily removed - and so I decided after all NOT to cut the cover in half - just to keep it clean in the belt area. my 0.02$ (please send money) Link to comment
Boffin
If you look at the alternator belt cover and the alternator itself, you will notice the cover is vented and the upper area around the alternator is completely open. The belt cover is more-or-less just a safety guard, cutting it in half will not have any effect on what gunk you get in there! Andy Link to comment

chrisz
Most if not all automobile alternators and belts are open to the environment, hence no issues. Link to comment
T__
chrisz, most if not all automobiles don’t have the front wheels throwing water,, mud,, or road debris on the front of the engine though.. Sure the top of the cover on the BMW boxer is open but road junk seldom can get up that far to drop in.. In fact the open top cover is a problem on my R1200RT as rain or wash water gets into the drive belt area & the belt slips like crazy for a time after a heavy rain or washing the bike..
