There's Nate, & then there's us, Part 1.....

Yesterday was our clubs ( BMWNEF) annual Sport Touring School held at JenningsGP , known as STS. Sport? Definitely. Touring? Not so much.

As was the case last year, Nate Kern was on hand to school us on everything gofast. Lines, late apex (more on that later), body position, etc. It was quite enlightening to hear, & see, what he has to do to win championships on a so-called disadvantaged motorcycle. If you've never seen him ride, I highly recommend you make a time to do so. On to the highlights.

I'll start with the instructors session, 'cause I know that's who you want to see.

Obligatory Nate shot, between turns 1 & 2. For some reason, no matter how hard I tried, I couldn't duplicate this maneuver.

Now, look at the difference. First is our lead instructor, on a race prep GSX-R750. By no means is he slow, so this is not a knock on him. I'm just illustrating the correlation between the fastest instructor, & Nate. First, Dean.

Now Nate. Same corner, same place, same session.

I spent a full lap behind Nate. I was at speed when he went by on the inside, then motioned for me to follow & watch. He maintained the pace, but with one hand on the bar, he instructed with his left hand. Showing when to wait, & when to turn in. Remember what I said about late-apexing? I only thought I was late. He then continued to point toward the apex, then, TOUCH IT with his finger as he crossed it! A full lap of this stuff at what I thought was fast. AMAZING!!!

A couple of shots of the Master of the Boxer. Here he is in front of our event organizer. Again, another fast guy.

Part deux to follow, or how RideSmart has changed my life.

I'll even show the ugly pictures.

Nate was on his factory HP2 Sport.

I was on my 12RT, AKA boat anchor, AKA BHP ( Big Heavy Pig).

I think the best part of this is on Nate. Last year, on a whim, our organizer invited him to come down. Nate didn't commit, but then showed up. This year, he committed early. He comes down here on his own expense, the club doesn't pay a dime. That's how much he enjoys this sport.

He's a great guy, very approachable, & easy to talk to.

Askin' ain't bein'.

Sorry you missed out, but now you got the link.

Join up, & y'all have a place to stay for next year. ( Well, anytime actually.)

I'd LOVE to see what a K12 Sport could do out there.

Oh, that reminds me. Nate said the first BMW he raced was a K12 Sport. He said they'd run over anything in front of it on a straight, but they don't turn for sh^*!

Did you know Jennings is a technical track? :/

Bring the Tuono.

Maybe we can plan a trackday for sometime next spring....at Barber or some other place.

I'll bring em both.

You pick the track get a couple other dudes to show up and we'll have a lot of fun.

On top of all this...

Nate came down to do our school, then left and drove back to ATL to fly to Long Beach today where he has to teach tomorrow.

A little bird intoned there might be the first US running of the 1000RR on Jennings sometime around Easter...

This was a tremendous day for me, much better than last year because I "got it" albeit in a later session than these pictures belie...

Thanks to Jim and all for making this work, and thanks Danny for hanging in the camper. Team FROSTBITE Racing kicks ASS!

I will greedily admit that part of the fun of my day was outriding my brother on his ZZR1200. He gives me plenty of guff about riding my little 60 HP toy bike. At least until I banged the limiter around 100 in the front straight, passed him and left him for dead in the ensuing half lap. I'm sure he'll have an excuse for it, but it was still fun shoving his extra 90 horses up his nose....

Craig,

Big Al (the thermometer in Danny's ginormous diesel truck) told us it was 27 degrees around 7 AM Saturday. When Danny fired up his bike the ice warning came on the dashboard.

Flying into known icing conditions we were glad to have fuel injection and no need for carb heaters (:dopeslap:) but I will cop to having my Gerbings liner on for the first session and my heated grips on almost all day.

Even kewler. The Bmw RofTB have never done a track day, not even very much chatter on our forum when other members were going to Jennings.

I don't know if its because they want someone else to plan it or what :dopeslap:

The track day was impressive. Watched Nate battle those guys at Barber this spring. Have the video/tape of Brian at RoadAmerica, love to listen to his bike run that race.

BUT, below freezeing starting out, that is very impressive.

I would bring the Tiger, but must keep the mirrors on, hate surprises, heh heh.
